How do I remove the quitening gears ?

Post by marcus57 » Sun Feb 05, 2012 6:10 pm

As above ( excuse my spelling )

Never done anything with an engine apart from replacing a clutch and I don't want to end up with a pile of bits .

Is it something I can do myself with some time and a Haynes ?

They have to be cut off mate, sounds good done I think but others will think it sounds like a bag of spanners runnnig.
It also gets rid of that dreadful wineing noise they make

In fact you've given me an idea now while it's in bits having carbs and things done.
Was going to wait till mine was having the heads ported but thats on the back burner till I have more time to get involved.

Just spoke to my brother and he said it's cams out, unbolt the cam drives and whip them out cut off carefully with a grinder place back in and time the cams back up job done ;)

Doesnt the head or something need skimming to take up the slack it leaves? probably wrong but im sure ive read that something needs doing along them lines. It does sound great tho although i wouldnt do it to a stock bike.

If I'm right you shim up only if the heads have been skimmed.

Its easy mate and no cutting required on the ones ive done.
Remove cams and the gears are only held in with a circlip. Once its been removed slide off the thinner gear along with the spring and locating dowels.
