Its for air. Screw in less air ( and thus more fuel in the fuel/air mix = richer) . Screw out more air ( thus more air in the fuel/air =leaner) but only affects the up to 1/4 throttle ( pilot circuit)

What are your plugs like now? If they're blackened up its rich, could be time for a new air filter??
