Rear brake vibrating like train track (nc21)?

Post by Vfr400/tbird » Fri Dec 23, 2011 1:24 pm

Hi,
Just started using rear brake recently as i find it easier when the bikes still warming up ie first 10 miles or so, but for some reason im now getting a judering sensation when brakes in use and also when its not, its like im riding on a trai track :?

I have recently taken the front calipers apart to remedy the front brakes sticking, and they are releasing a lot quicker after application, but not perfect, they still need new pads due to contamination and probaly a set of seals and pistons but no proper cash at the mo :(

is it possible the rear caliper is sticking on and the disc maybe eaither warped or out of alignment?

If warped does anyone have a spare?

Any quick remedies just to get me through the last days of this year?

Quick remedies and brakes are not a good combination. They are the only thing that stop the bike and prevent you from getting into an accident... been there done that trying to scrimp on brakes.

NC21/24 brakes are cheap and easy to overhaul but worth doing properly.

I wrote a guide on what to replace on the front calipers.

Could be sticking rear brake pistons (nc21 has two piston rear I believe)

warped disc / crap in between.

Lift the rear up and have somebody turn the wheel, see if it's stiff.

A juddering or pulsing sensation comes from something sticking intermittently, whereas a sticking or seized piston will be permanently 'on' and make the wheel harder to turn all the way round.
This problem indicates a warped or bent disc, or possibly wheel misalignment (though that would have to be pretty significant and you should notice that).

NC21's do have two chromed steel pistons (I'm rebuilding mine at the moment) so extracting them is twice the fun, while my front brakes have plastic pistons ... would this be because the front brakes are more critical and plastic ones are not likely to seize in the caliper?

I did do the chain adjustment only recently, so possible it could be missaligined ill check it out :?

The front pistons are plastic!, i thought they were metal (never new that!)
I wouldnt have thought the disc is warped as the rear brake never realy gets used and its only recently its been doing the ratteling sensation!
Ill investigate properly when im feeling a bit more up to it, been inside most of the holidays as ive caught the darn man flu virus lol

I realy wana get the vfr sorted though as i've got spend some time working on the triumph as were planning a european trip come the summer and dont like the idea of taking the vfr as its a bit too cramped for 2500 miles of good knows what weather, road surfaces and lots of duty free lol

If you've got a bit of baked on crud on the pad or disc suface it can cause this. Go at it wth some wet and dry perhaps?
