Alternative brake calipers for an NC21

Post by Chrissy_J » Mon Nov 21, 2011 8:06 pm

Anyone ever fitted 'different' brake calipers to an NC21? I've just been offered a set from an NC35 at a really good price; obviously they won't fit straight on but I can have new brackets made.

My existing OEM calipers need overhauling and it'll cost the same to do that, as to buy the NC35 calipers which are ready to use with new pads.

Is it worth doing, do you think?

Erm, not really.

The NC21 calipers have weird brackets, if your having them made it's not so much a problem as you won't be able to buy off the shell components.

The NC31 calipers do activate the anti-dive system under-braking though you'd have to not use it at all.

I'm not prepared to start messing around with the antidive system so any bracket made would have to accomodate that. From what I've seen it won't be that much of a problem; all that would be different from the original bracket would be two caliper mounting holes instead of sliding pins.

From my engineering experience, it's doable.

Have a go!

The anti-dive system works by the caliper bracket pivoting and pushing a pin into the forks to limit the flow of oil.

The later calipers that are opposed piston are wider on the side that faces the wheel so you'll need to see if everythign will actually line up.

Brackets might get a bit big compared to the nc30 ones which just alter the spacing a little larger.

You'll see if you get hold of a caliper or two.

With decent pads and an overhaul of seals (there are less seals in the 2 piston calipers) they are still quite good if you make sure the sliders are lubed with the proper grease and all the rubber seals are replaced. Last time I did a set of 24 calipers it cost about 35gbp for seals.

Have a go, take some photos if you make anything
