Fusebox probs...

Post by ludacris » Mon Oct 17, 2011 9:44 am

Ok so the RVF keeps blowing the 15A fuse. The indicators and horn weren't working and turned out to be a blown fuse but everytime I replace the fuse it blows so thinking I've shorted the wiring. Admittedly I did some noobish things..since the 15A would blow, I tried a 20A in its place, worked for a few seconds and then that blew. The biggest noob thing was using a 30A in it's place which worked but produced some smoke so switched it off and pulled it out...

Too much time in the garage and not enough on the road!

What do you guys suggest? Lol keep the flaming to a minimum please...it was very late at night :P

Does the fuse have a name, the indicators run of a 10A fuse not 15A. The only 15A fuse in the box should be the headlights.

yes you're right...sorry, it's the 15A for the starter/headlight that keeps blowing..the diagram in the box lid says it should be 10 - ign, 10 - indicators, horn, 15 - start, headlight and 10 - fan.

I had never had any reason to check the fuses but the previous owner had it set up with 10, 20, 15 and 20..??

In that case it follows that you cannot start the engine. Does the fuse blows when you turn the ignition on or when you press the start button?

Try removing the headlight relay, that will leave only the starter circuit connected to that fuse. See what happens then. If the fuse still blows it suggests there is a short in the loom. Where did the smoke come from when you used the 30A fuse?

I would use the correct fuses in all the circuits, if they blow there is a fault. Bigger fuses than spec means more wiring damage if there is a fault.

Ok...so this problem has just reared its head again...

I've even replaced the entire wiring harness and yesterday I took the bike out to stretch its legs out a bit as its been a while. Ride started off well enough, everything was working fine and then about 10-15 minutes into I noticed that my indicators were not working so came back home.

This morning, tried to track down the problem and sure enough the 10A fuse was blown, interesting I thought and proceeded to change it. Turn the ignition on and what do you know, the new 10A fuse blows as well.

Can anyone shed some light on this cos I am stumped. The flasher relay is ok, wiring is ok...wondering what else could be the culprit

Is the "Indicator" fuse the only one that blows? The 10A "Indicator" fuse in the RVF also powers the front & rear brake lamps via their respective switches, tacho and temp gauges and most dash lamps. Did these all stop functioning also.

If you have changed the loom, then one of the peripheral circuits listed above must be suspect. You either need a multimeter to hunt down the culprit or, as a last resort, a box of 10 A fuses and then sequentially disconnect the peripheral circuits until the Indicator fuse stops blowing when you turn the ignition on.

Sounds like you may have a shorted bulb or bulb socket.

Remove the indicator bulbs from their sockets and turn the ignition on with a new fuse and see if you get the problem.

Then replace bulbs one at a time and see if one of them causes the fuse to blow.

I've had bulbs cause a dead short before.

Could also be moisture / water in one of the bulbs shorting out.

Easiest option to try
