so i bought myself a nc30..and it has a charge problem. charges between 12.4 and 12.7 while idle without lights on. what can it be? knowing the rectifiers on these bikes are known to fail,, i have hear u can 'upgrade' your current one, or replace with another bikes better unit. can anyone share some light upon this? what is the actual problem with the vfr rec units? could someone give a short breakdown on rectifiers and how one would go about upgraing it,and why it would be considered an upgrade etc.. and lastly, if there is any bike rectifier which would be a straight fit, that will plug in directly, and be a 'upgrade' or stronger unit than the current?
having said this, i need to still find out what the actual problem is. i might just have my whole charging system redone, but dont want my rectifier to mess up shortly down the line again.

disconnect the altenator... 3 yellow wires... run the bike at 5000rpm and set the multimeter to AC voltage.. should have at least 50v on every pair of wires, if you call them A,B,C
AB = 50v
AC = 50v
BC = 50v
Test the resistance between the pairs too, should be 0.1 - 1 ohm.
If this is all ok sounds just like the regulator is knacked.
If the output is too low then the generator is knackered.
Also might be worth replacing the battery if its old and condition unknown

hi there!
so i got it tested as the above method and:
along all 3 pairs, upon idle:
A B C , all 25v.
Upon a 5000rpm constant rev:
A B C, all 65v.
from there, we didnt even bother testing the resistance, (actually we did but the multimeter ran outa battery lol).
so am i looking at a new regulator?

First I would buy a new battery for multimeter and check the resistances to be sure. If they are ok then yes it will be the regulator, ivwould also check the condition of the terminals in the reg plug.

okay il do so. il just spray some Q20 lube on the contact points of the rec. otherwise, there is a rec unit here, a aftermarket one, for R650 new, which is about 80US dollars. should work,it has fins on too,where as the standard unit doesnt. il also be buying heatsink paste from a computer shop...
