just a quickie- valve clearances
Think i remember before the forum facelifts, there was a post on checking the clearances- the bit i want to just clarify was where you measure it from - I seem to remember that someone said haynes manual says to measure between the shim and the follower/ rocker and i thought someone said thats wrong and it should be between the camshaft and the top of the follower/rocker ??
Cheers in advance, and i survived the nurburgring lol - what an amazing, mental experience!!! Is there anywhere else ( apart from nobbers on the road...) where you can spank round a course mixing it with cars?? Porker gt2's and gt'3 were the dominators on track - went round everyone else like they were going backwards! them overtaking me when im mid corner was quite erm, livening !! lol

im not an old member i guess im a n00b,
but i can assure you this is where you measure, its the shim your measuring and if you look at gareths picture (Old Member), his feeler guage blades are between the shim and rocker arm, the same place you measure for valve clearance on ANY vehicle/engine, this is the area where the WEAR is caused and where you change the shim to change the clearance.

Re: just a quickie- valve clearances
I'm amazed, my memory is so rubbish but i found the old thread!! Here it is in all its glory - All told by the knowledgeable man himself Mr rick Oliver :-)
Malc - you should be aware that Mr Haynes has it wrong on how to check the clearances - Haynes says put the feeler between the cam and the rocker arm but in fact you should measure between the tip of the rocker and the shim which sits on top of the valve. Doing it the Haynes way will give you readings which appear to be too tight...
(Mail me if you`d like a copy of the `how to` guide - r.oliver(at)mtxnet.co.uk )
Actually this isnt quite true - In the written instructions its tells you do measure it between the shim and rocker ( which is correct ) but if you look at the diagram it shows the feeler blade being put at the cam to rocker which is the wrong bit :-) Glad i found it just to put my mind at rest! lol

The image of gareths quite clearly shows the feeler blade between the Shim and Rocker, which as i said and Rick Oliver Said the same as what i told you last evening?

Re: just a quickie- valve clearances
the only reason i put that up was to clear up was where haynes had it wrong , i was a bit unsure at first as i hadn't done the valve clearances for years. i first bought my nc30 back in 98' - did them maybe a year or so later as i got to know my bike ( and learnt more in the apprenticeship role as a grease monkey ) but when something sticks in your mind you want to clear it up so it doesnt play up on your own conscience :-)
i got it a bit mixed up at first and after reading the sticky it showed where to measure it from , and as porndog pointed out where to measure it , that was enough for me to carry on
"The image of gareths quite clearly shows the feeler blade between the Shim and Rocker, which as i said and Rick Oliver Said the same as what i told you last evening? " , which was why i carried on and measured the shims
So now its all cleared up , handbags down perhaps?? :-) and i aint no noob either ... just maybe guilty of not posting up what i want want to say the right way
