Both my tyre valves have split!? wtf

Post by jetblack » Sun Jun 12, 2011 12:24 pm

Just went to top up the air in my tyres and on removing the cap the valves have both just bent over and split, pissing air out.

I suspect this may be because the previous owner sprayed the wheels with the tyres still on the rim and the paint that over sprayed onto the valves has degraded the rubber? it looks all dry and manky.

So now i need to get new valves put in both wheels :(

Anyone know how much this is likely to cost- getting the rear wheel off is going to be a pig of a job (£££), no?

edit>>>>>>>>>>>>
just read the haynes, looks like the rear wheel isn't so bad. i was imagining having to remove the swing arm. phew...

with the correct sized socket and stand rear wheel is a 1 min job
front takes 10 with the correct tools.

if tyres are tired then just get a new pair at the same time, either way both tyres will need removing / refitting to get new valves.
MOT failure too

buy a set of short valves off ebay, about £3
take the wheels off,
you only need to break the bead one side where the valve is and you can put a new one in,

youll just need compressed air to pop the tire back into the bead, ive done it before :)

if your local ill take them to my mates and get them done free.
update your location on your profile so any local members maybe able to offer assistance.

This came up in a topic recently.

I know when my tyres are changed by FWR in London they replace the valves with every tyre changes. I think they have a special tool to pull the valves through the hole tho?

On the receipts for the tyres they cost a pound 50
