ive stripped the rear hub assembly on my nc30 and the needle bearing is in good condition and the big ball bearing rotates smoothly enough but would probably benefit from being cleaned out and re-greased.

Is it possible re-grease this bearing, if so does it need removing from the holder unit or is it a sealed bearing?

i regreased mine, left it to soak for 24hours in a saucepan of parafin (kerosene for the yanks) and then the day after used fresh/clean parafin in a clean pan, used a nylon brush on the dremmel full speed in the parafin, so all the rollers and balls and races/cases got 360 cleaning,

wiped as dry as i could, then used a heat matt (or hairdryer will do the job), then a last once over with white kitchen roll to make sure theres no dirt or grit, (air line blast will be good too if you have access), then pack the mother out of it with Lithium Grease,

dont need to remove bearings from the hub, leave all in there other wise removing the bearing will require you to refit new.

can someone clarify if the ORIGINAL hub bearings are SEALED?

mine wernt so im unsure wether mine is original or wether the sealed one is original?

mine was an open bearing and allowed me to smoother the fucker with grease,

where as styler apears to have a SEALED bearing and is now worried hes buggered his bearings up.

if its a rubber sealed bearing you can pull the rubber seal off btw,

Original are not sealed, there is a yellow plastic ring in betwwen them, replacements are sealed and you do not need this ring.

Apologies to porndoguk, i just had crapped myself when i realised mine are sealed.

Would it be possible and wise to carefully make a hole in the bearing seal side wall or pry off the seal a bit at the edge and syringe some grease in it or am i better off just getting a used hub or new bearing and seal?

Am i right in presuming its two seperate bearings side by side, meaning i would have to open the inner bearing seal wall from inside which would be tricky!!

It will also be hard to access the outer bearing as it has a large loose washer partially covering the bearing seal wall, then the dust seal which keeps the large washer in.

Yes they are two bearings side by side.
To gain access to inner bearing would mean removing them, to gain access to the outer bearing, remove dust seal (just pops out) and out will come large washer/spacer.
If you hve seald bearings they must have been changed at some point?

pull the seals off the bearings, get a scalpal in there, pull out with some needle nose pliers and smoother them with grease. rotate them add more grease etc etc

Sealed are usually use in dry area/high speeds/dusty etc where grease is dispelled or in free air where it cant be enclosed the rear wheel hub is neither, or gets easily contaminated

its not high speed, ok some will disagree but high speeds in bearing terms are like 10k RPM +, im not sure what the rear wheel does but its no way near a 1000 RPM.

plus the hub is enclosed so you can stick a shit load of grease in there and theyll self lubricate,

I presume your on about the KOYO 6908RS bearing (i think thats the right number...)

Its two bearings, held together with a plastic clip.. you can pull them apart.

One side has a dust-seal on it, the parts that are held together with the plastic clip don't.

This bearing is 65gbp from Honda but David Silver Spares ussually carry the identical part but cheaper imported from Japan for around 25gbp so best to check with them.

To check the bearing clean it out first.. you can't really tell if it is good or bad (unless it is knackered!) when theres grease in it, if you blast it through with some parafin to get the grease out then spin it in your fingers.. any rough spots( that arnt trapped dirt and can be cleaned out) or side to side play then replace the bearing.
