NC 30 front sprocket doesn't fit

Post by Cornish VFR » Sun May 15, 2011 6:48 pm

Hi everyone I am new but have tried to search so forgive me if this has been covered.

Ok so I have a G reg 1989 NC 30 and I am replacing chain and sprockets. Rear Is fine but the renthal front I ordered was about 1.5mm thinner around the body of the sprocket not the teeth. As a result once the bolt Is done up tight to the end of the shaft there was still play in the sprocket, it would slide up and down on the shaft this surely is not right so I returned it to the shop and noticedit had 90-92 written on the packet, ah that's what's wrong.. Told the man, the man looked in his book and then tels me they didn't make an NC30 until 1990! Ok my
Money back please and off I head to a Honda dealer who looks on the same after market catalogue and tels me there is no such thing as a 1989 NC30 but perhaps he is mistaken he needs the chassis no, I supply it wait a week and a new sprocket, now with rubber discs either side of the teath for vibration reduction I guess but it's still too thin by 0.5mm. Closer but no cigar, am I just missing something? Do I need a new washer or a spacer or something? The old sprocket fits perfectly though so I turn to you guys for help. Cheers

lol, i had a similar problem, i spoke to 3-4 very respectable honda specilists and some dealerships who all where using dodgy part catologe books telling me the parts i needed dont exsist lol

later spoke to another lad in southampton who has a proper parts book and he clarified for me that it does!!! cos its an early jap import. most peeps only have the uk parts book or somin!!

try this guy 02380630326

if its not that number, it will be the number i got the other number from, if you get me..... he forwarded me a guys number, tony i think. good lad he was, buys out shed loads of vfr stock from companys or somin. lol soz its not so detailed my info, i was at work when i was searching for the info.

Thanks guys, you would think it was the same and the splints are correct just the width, it can't be right sliding side to side on the shaft, I might end up dressing the end of the shaft in order for the bolt and washer to hold it tight but I felt sure that the second one ordered a genuin Honda part looked up on the microfiche would fit, ho hum. I am supprised no one else has encountered this problem as there are several 89's around. I will try the number thanks for that and I will let you all know how I get on, cheers A

OK thanks again guys an update I called the number you gave me and he confirmed I needed Honda Part No 23801 KY2 005 and that would also be for a CBR 500... guess what thats the same one my Honda dealer specified and you see the difference is only 0.4 mm but thats allot of play on the shaft, I think I am just going to have to take 0.5mm off the end of the drive shaft but surely this isnt right and I cant be the only one?

Cheers amorti, You know what its like if enough people tell you an apple is orange you start believing them... I don't suppose you have a Honda part no: ? the likelihood they will give me a refund for a specially ordered part is slim so I would like to be able to give them a part number that they can exchange it for.. They reckon my bike is a K but the site details for that sprocket is L-M ? Sorry for the blurb I am just trying to get to the bottom of the misunderstanding. Thanks for the help you guys. A

The K, L or whatever matters not., The 1989 bikes are identical motors wise - I haev a 1989 and a 1992 bike and have had others come and go...the sprocket is the same beast.

What you have in your possesion is the right part number but the fiche shows that you should have a "washer 10.2mm" too - you still go tthat?

The reason the shope thinks nothing was made pre 1990 is that is what the fiche says.

So..bit of a bugger..but don't be grinding anything off the output shaft! That is madness. When a sprocket costs fuck all in the scheme of things.

Hi CMSMJ1, don't panic I would definitely not be taking 0.5mm off the shoulder of such a shaft with a grinder. Unfortunately the confusion continues. Forgive me if this seams rude but washer or not the two sprockets are different dimensions, the old one is correct and fits, the new one (second new one) is wrong and does not fit so the washer is not the issue if you see what I mean. Unfortunately I am also confident that honda aren't in the business of putting the wrong part number on the parts packet can you imagine trying to put the big end bearing shells from a CBR thou in a CD 125....( I bet dsome clever person will tell me they will fit now knowing my luck  ) So I am still at a loss if w have the right number and the weong sprocket maybe they have made a boo boo? I will be purchasing a JTF sprocket (can anyone give details of a supplier?). I hope I am not boring people but I am trying to be thorough and pin point the cause of the issue so we can all learn as I do like to get to the bottom of things. I will check my engine No: as well incase the previous owner did anything odd but that is very unlikely given the engine rebuild I have done threw up no other such issues and the cracking info from amorti. Thanks again guys I will post more pics soon Cheers Alex

lol this is why I'm reluctant to go to honda dealers with a grey import.

Rick Oliver is the man to source sprockets from, he'll sort you out.
