good ol Reg/Rec....!
has anyone got to a stage where the bike will not run?
everything was fine today, went to Braintree 8 ball Cafe (crap food). bike stalled on the way, i just thought silly me more throttle next time!
bike started just fine at the cafe to come home.
pulled in to a petrol station as someone needed fuel (group ride). bike refused to start! all i get is the tick tick of the starter motor. bike did push start.
get to a roundabout 5 mins later and bike stalls just as i was about to pull in to roundabout.. now the group gets split!.. bike push started...
20 mins later the bike stalls (low speed) again but right out side Jim Aims KTM dealers..
mechanic has a look at battery.... dead... but i knew that.. why was it dead?
no charge going to the battery.. reg/rec or alternator.. pack highest reading on volt meter was 10V while revving 2K, this should be higher... 14V at least all above readings with NO headlights on....i NOW increase the idle speed from 1,500rpm to 2K rpm to stop it stalling at low speeds. i get 15 mins down the road and bike DIES on me as if the fuel has been cut off.. i manage to pull in to a layby and nothing could be done to start it again!
finally got home (mate & trailer) @ 9pm, battery on trickle bike charger for the rest of the night. all i want is for the bike to start as normal tomorrow.. esp after the way it died make sure nowt else is cocked up!
i thought a bike could run on a flat battery so long as the engine was running.......?
a mate said that the ignition system needs juice from battery?

Re: good ol Reg/Rec....!
Yes LP I have been there as well. Its a complete pain when your miles from home, I keep meaning to buy a spare rec/reg to keep with my on the chance it does blow again. Regarding the non running I agree there seems to be a limit on when you can even bump start the bike, I once had a very fit army lad run raggered trying to push my bike but would it hell start, had to go home and charge the battery so I could go back and get it home.
Have you thought of getting one of those tri colour battery leds and fitting it, it may give advance warning of failure, before your battery goes flat? Its available on ebay and you can give the seller, Andrew, the thresholds that the LED voltage changes colour. I think mine is at 12< Red/flashing, 12.4<orange/flashing, 12.6<Orange (Normal), 13<Green (charge) and 15.2 Red/Green flashing (overcharge). I recommend this product with excellent back up.

Battery on trickle charge for 10-12hrs.. bike turned over a few times really slowly! so yes battery is Fecked!
jumped the bike from my wee vans battery and it turned over just fine.. after a few coughs it started and ran just fine.. phew!
I know i can get a 2nd hand reg/rec for £30 ish. BUT .. how long will that last me? and when it goes it will kill another battery!!
i am more inclined now to get a new unit.
DSS price doesnt inc postage.. + £5!
This one inc postage..

will phone them up tomorrow and see if i can get it in on tuesday.

Re: good ol Reg/Rec....!
if it is of any use i have a cbr 1000 rec, bought it for my 929 blade but it wont fit. yours for what i paid £15, pics on a previous thread, should be no reason why it wont work on a vfr - 5 wires all the right colour.

Re: good ol Reg/Rec....!
Get a 1999-2005 yamaha R6 unit if you want a cheap, reliable used unit. More reliable than any honda (shunt type) unit, I've fitted these to every single honda I've owned.
Fit another honda unit at your own risk! This will only delay electrical problems in my opinion, not fix the issue.
Interesting article below on the use of newer type mosfet regulators, as opposed to standard type shunt regs. I'll be upgrading all future 400's I own to mosfet regs:

Re: good ol Reg/Rec....!
the R6 R/R.. is it a straight plug in or do i need to swap the plug/wires about?
the other issue i have is time.. & lack of!
2 & a half weeks left to get as much riding in as i can.. so every day i waste is lost! i will be phoning the company to order a RR at 9.45am... unless i can find the R6 RR & know it will fit/cheaper

Re: good ol Reg/Rec....!
You'll need to use standard female spade terminals with the R6 reg.
Fix it once, fix it properly and all....
