Remote battery terminals

I was pondering the other week ( believe it or not ).

And I came to wonder about putting remote battery terminals, somewhere more readily accessible then under my seat. Maybe somewhere on the frame, or even under the passenger's seat.

I could eventually use it for say fitting a 12v charger for my Ipod/Phone/Iphone.

Has anyone come across anything like this, or have any idea's on how I could go about it?

I have the lead for the Optimate charger under there?!
You might need something more substantial if you're thinking jumping the bike from it at some point!

Jumping the bike was the original reason I came up with the idea.

But I'm not sure as to how if I could get a pre-made insulated post for the positive, and what gauge wire I should be running.

It would have to be pretty chunky, like the stuff that runs to the starter motor. Some cars have these mounted under the bonnet if that's not where the battery is stored so maybe a breakers might have one?! I think some of the Citroen's have it like that - Picasso maybe?

chop some of the wire off a set up of jump leads.....saves a trip to the breakers.

Or you could do that.

Easy if you know how - nice bit of thick cable (yes, cheapo jump-leads might be good or this, or get something from here; solder some sort of terminal on the end (whatever you have handy); insulate by getting some heatshrink, covering the last few inches of cable, allowing you to "push back" the insulation as required.

Not sure I see the point though, for the sake of taking the rider's seat off. If you need a jump start that often, you probably have a dodgy battery! Also, you are still reliant on a good Samaritan with jump-leads coming to your rescue.

If you just want it for chargers or similar, you could wire in one of these and use regular car chargers.

Super-cheap, just cut the clamps off, and wire to the battery with some round terminals. Use an inline fuse! 3A should be more than enough for your typical charger or similar. Probably even 1.5A would work and be a little safer.

But If I wired some remote terminals into the passengers tray, lets say near the fuse box. I could use it for so many different uses.

If I did need a jump start, Not only would I need some jumper leads, but I would also possibly need a screwdriver to remove the drivers seat, as apposed to the key to remove the passengers seat.

If I wanted to hook up a 12v power source, instead of wiring to the battery I could just wire to the remote terminals.

If I wanted to charge the battery, I could just hook up to the terminals instead of the battery.

So many uses!!

Meh, do what you want but think about this:
When did you last need a jump start?
Chargers will be easier on a lighter socket.
If you want to charge the battery in the bike, fit an optimate plug.

All this worry about jump starts and battery charging? Sounds like you want a new battery. Even an nc, if started, run for a few miles at decent rpm, then used regularly, will hold a charge in its battery if the battery is good and the charging system.

What you are suggesting sounds to me like a great way of somehow or other getting an accidental short when the +ve lead touches the frame rail, and blowing most of your electrics in one fell swoop (esp. since I bet you weren't planning on fusing it properly)

Just keep the onboard toolkit "onboard" and you won't have a problem removing the front seat, or doing any other emergency roadside repairs..

Lol, well I don't even have an onboard toolkit.

Really should have that of that instead.
