Oil temps

Post by Drunkn Munky » Fri Mar 25, 2011 11:47 am

Just recieved a oil temp sender for the KOSO dash i have and wondering what you guys think the optimum temp for the oil is?

Pretty useless gadget but it'll be nice to see if my engine needs a oil cooler

I guess it depends on what type and grade oil you have in the bike too as a lof of the synth oils are more resiliant to heat.

I seem to recall somewhere around 80c was 'optimal' for a motorcycle and about 100c in the sump?.

I removed the oil cooler from the ZXR though

Well its a sump plug sender, So oil is generally hotter in the sump than it is in the engine?

I should imagine so.

As the oil is lubricating the engine it also loosing heat as the engine block itself is water cooled.

It should be the hottest in the sump, taking the temp here should be ok though, i think most synth oils are good for upto 200c.

Around 100c, just over it should be hot enough to boil off any condensation / water in the oil.

As long as your sump isnt silly temperature then you should be safe to say the rest of the oil is cooler than this temp
