bike died !

Post by vfrjim » Mon Mar 21, 2011 8:55 am

have had my vfr since last august and love it to bits after spending lots of money on it and my license and i am slowly starting to lose my rag with it now .....

had am amazing day out on saturday going to fox cafe berinsfield , over 150 bikes !

went yesterday at around 1pm was going through chinnor fine then everytime i went to use low throttle it wasnt doing anything and when i opened it up more it was ok .

got further through the village came to the straight opened it up a bit , the further i was going the less throttle i had left after !

got to the end and had a bit of back fire and then she dies ! .... wasnt going to start , but when trying to start sounded like spark plugs as i had this issue before but replaced 2 months ago ... has it really eaten another set?

would appreciate any info off anyone so please give your suggestions to whats happened here.

Jim.

So, right now - does it turn over?

What colour are the plugs?
have you got a decent vacuum line?
when you say low throttle...do you mean it owuld cruise on full throttle, but not on lower throttle?

Any reg rec history?

Try and pin it down - start on the obvious ones. Is it getting fuel? Does it have a charged battery? Are the plugs OK?

hi there ! , thanks for such a quick reply .

the bike has been left on a womans drive in thame and it will be much later before i collect it .

the battery is now dead after me trying to start it so much .

the plugs were replaced 2months ago

yes you are correct it cruises when opened but when closing it was dying so had to keep her open.

the bike had cut out getting to the little roundabout and there was no power(lights , wouldnt turn over etc ) for about 60 seconds.

i havent had a chance to look at obvious bits and bobs just trying to work out if someone has a good idea from the symptoms.

Jim

thanks for your time.

I reckon dead generator then...or dying at least.

If it is managing to stay alive on hgher revs then the charge is just enough from the generator to keep it alive..as soon as you go too low on the revs, it wants to die.

So, get it back, don't bother trying to start it. Check the battery voltage and I'll be amazed if more than 12.5V

Ideally, get it started on jump leads and do the generator checks - does it haev 50v AC in each phase (unplug the genny where it comes between the V and by your right knee - check each wire against it's neghbour

If you get less than 50v AC at 5000 k revs then the genny is toast. Then do the same check with the multlimeter set to resistance, If you get resistance in any phase, it is dead... Should be no resistance (or very little..almost none)

If that works OK, then you are going to have a fecked reg rec - not regulating the charge and providing the battery with not enough juice.

didnt really think of that , altho when i was at the side of the road the starter was turning the engine over for about 2 minutes before flat battery !

why does everything go wrong for me ? haha
