OK - so not the speedo if it makes it past the 5.5k

What stats it eh airbox in? Is it all there? not had anything chopped off or holes drilled etc?

classic symptoms of poor fuelling.

If you cleaned the carbs, did you check what jets are in it? Whether any washers under the needles?

diaphragms seated right?

I live in Sheffield, work in Wakey... ;)

But, if your mate cleaned the carbs - but does ont know the jets, o whether there are washers on teh needles...then he cleaned the outside of them only..

Carbs will need checking to make sure it is not setup by a muppet.

Sounds like it's restricted to me. If it is, it will still rev above 5.5 k, but only on two cylinders. You'll probably feel it vibrating through the seat like a tractor or similar above 5.5 k ;) It will still get up to speed in first, but very slowly with no increase through the gears.

If the speedo is still working, it could be as simple as an unplugged connector behind the speedo. I'd give the loom a good going over before going any further
