Short circuit on an NC30

Post by slr123 » Tue Feb 15, 2011 4:22 pm

My NC30 keeps short circuiting, last month i started it up after it had been sat over winter, it started up ok but then after a couple of minutes cut out, later found out a fuse had gone (the 30A fuse that has it's own box, not sure what fuse it actually is) so i bought some new fuses but they just blow every time i connect the battery. According to the Manual that means there is a short circuit and following some advice from some bike people i know, i looked every where for some exposed wires that could be causing this. I couldn't find any, but it doesn't help that the last owner used about 3 rolls of electrical tape on the bike and it's loose everywhere. I did look for a mobile mechanic near me but can't find one, so was wondering if you guys had any advice on what it could be or what i could do?

That sounds like the one the sits on the starter solinoid?!
I'm guessing a main live is earthing somewhere. Does it blow before you even turn the key?
Have you checked the main positive lead to the starter solinoid and follow that back to the battery? Check for damage. Check under the solinoid too.
Hmm, if it's a mess of insulation tape I'm thinking this might take a while...

That's the one! It blows as soon as i even connect the battery. I have followed the leads and all seems ok, i was considering taking all the tape off and just taping everything back together, but not sure if I'll mess it up even more. There doesn't seem to be much damage anywhere really.

To be honest, if it were mine, i would cut my losses, with trying to sort the existing loom, as it sound pretty butchered :(
You could get a second hand one from the "for sale section" on here that you can swap, and save yourself lots of time and hassle trying to find the source of the problem.
Unless you really want to check all the loom for shorts? ;)

It will be hard to tell what the problem is until you unwrap. I've found broken wires in the loom before when the tape is removed, the wiring can get very brittle.

I'm more inclined to take skinnydog's approach these days, or make up an entire new loom.

Hi, have you tried unplugging the reg/rec or anything else and see wat happens? Have you got a multimeter or anything? And why was the loom taped up has it been "modified" or something?
I'd deffo try unplugging a few things before i take the loom out as you got to unplug it all to take it out anyway!
Cheers

I would just sell it and be done as it has been nothing but trouble since owning it, however it is registered restricted and I don't come off of my restriction until August, so i don't wan to have to pay £200 or whatever it is to get another bike restricted.

Hey i understand you are frustrated, but don't sell it. These V4's are probably the best bikes Mr Honda has made for us. Once you have it sorted and un-restricted you will see why they have such a strong following.

Do you have a haynes manual?
If you do, then you can get a multi meter and check the relevant parts in the circuit.
If you do feel like swapping the loom, get one from on here, and then we can offer you advice on how to swap it over.
I have swapped my loom over about 4 times in the last few months (problems with CDI plug  )
