Weird charging issue. Any ideas?

Hey guys, I've got a slightly weird charging issue with my '91 NC29. It seems to be charging a bit when idling but as soon as you raise the revs (even as low as 2.5-3 krpm) it stops charging and starts draining the battery. I would guess that this would be due to a regulator/rectifier unit on its way out but the unit in there isn't very old at all (less than a year). Any chance that this might be a problem with the generator coils or anything else (and any easy tests to check this)?

Cheers,
Ben

Quick update - I've checked the coils and they seem to be fine as does all the wiring. The one anomaly I have come up with is checking the regulator terminal resistances. This is the table from the Haynes manual:

My unit tests exactly as it says it should but with the +/- polarities reversed?! Any clues on whether this means the unit is shot or is that OK (since the unit deals with AC anyway)?
