Breather tube?

Post by findoo » Tue Nov 16, 2010 9:05 pm

Been running my nc24 for about a month or two now, and it's got a really weak idle. It'll tick over for about 10 seconds without choke and then just stall. No issues if i just keep revving it though.
Before I bought the bike the carbs were cleaned out (or so a receipt says!), so I don't think it's any problem with them.
Suspected it could be blocked jets or something, so tried some fuel additive meant to clean out jets (I really dont have the mechanical knowledge to take out jets and whatnot!). That didn't really make much of a difference though.
The only odd thing I've thought about is the breather tube. There's a small hole in the actual tube that goes into the tank, and looking into that hole, it seems to be going into solid metal. Furthermore, I can pull it out from under the tank, so it's obviously not connected to anything. Is this normal, if not, how would it actually effect the running of the bike? and if so, where the hell is it meant to be connected to!? :?

Cheers guys

Nope that's normal. The breather tube is only there as a drain for condensation and fuel vapour. It leads to a seperate compartment in the tank, a sort of overflow chamber if you like.

Where abouts are you? I could always take a look at it for you if you're in the North West. I've just got my 24 back on the road after 8 years laid up and I was having similar issues.

In Edinburgh mate. Might just send it in to a honda dealership and let them try and sort it, or give the learning experience of taking the jets out a go! :P
I wonder if just raising the idle speed slightly would fix it? I doubt another half a thousand revs would be that bad for the engine. Otherwise, it's got a new air filter, oil filter, etc.. So I'm clueless

Hi, what revs does it idle at, when it is idling, I have my 24 idling at 13-1400, which I believe is a little on the high side but I prefer it that way.

Raising the idle is easy there's a small black (six or so 'points') knob that should sit just below the carbs on the left hand side (sat on bike) that's the adjuster, use that to get a setting that you're happy with, I forget what it's supposed to be but think it's 12-1300 rpm.

Just found spec which say 1300 + or - 100 rpm.

Have a go it's far from rocket science ;)

Your breather tube sounds to be fine, it's there, as Thunderace says, to allow vapour (petrol or water) out, but also to let air in as your bike consumes the tank contents

Wahey, surprisingly just turning the idle adjuster to the right very very slightly fixed it entirely :?
Cheers for the help guys, this is a great place for troubleshooting such a tempermental bike.. :peace:
