reading the haynes there is no check with forks on bike. do i need to remove forks to check fluid level?

Im sure you have to check the level without springs in, compressed and upright, so would need taking off. not hard to do, just time consuming. I used castrol fork oil bought from the local halfords. The stuff I took out seemed to be the original and stunk badly of fish oil..

If you read this before 6pm, I may call into the wetlands tonight from work around 6pm if its not raining. so if you want to take measurements for your fairing call in if you can, look for a small bloke/white/purple/red nc29. I be the only one for sure.

No thats b******s, you can do the fork oiol with the forks on the bike- the front end will drop (an abba stand is top for this)- The tops need taking off the forks (the bike will drop when the second is released) the springs need removing and the oil can be drianed at the bottom bleed nut- the correct amount to replace with is 408mm per fork and I put a heavier 15 weight in mine, no need to remove them from the bike. Easy job.

Thanks for the info there mate, unfortunately for me i done them last week, removing them from bike and swimming is fish smelling oil. Bear this in mind next time bud.

To be honest Im sure you can do your forks the way robbosliding says, but to check levels if you want a correct air gap in both I think that taking the forks off would provide a more accurate way as I can remember I had to add or take away oil to get the correct 120mm oil level. Im no expert but I know thats the way I done this, I admit. I was also replacing and polishing fork items when I done my forks, so maybe didnt think of the other way .As usual each to his own.
