Reg Rec Short????

Hi guys

having an annoying electrical problem

riding home from the pub (completely sober i might add) over taking some slower traffic when my bike dies lights engine everything fortunately wasnt too far from home so i could push it back.

anyway got it home had a quick look at the fuses found my main fuse had blown battery had plenty of charge so i figured shorting out on the frame somewhere.

next day got a new fuse ignition off put it in straight away blown again. so that narrows it down to the reg/rec :( or associated wiring so i checked all the wires all seem ok and then with a 9v battery and a lighty pokey thing (basically a screw driver with a light filement in it) set about finding the short.

it seems that the reg rec is earthing from the red/white wire down the green to its frame earth, is that supposed to happen??

if not does this mean i need a new reg rec :( if it is supposed to happen i havent a clue where the short is, any help greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

alex

The red wire is +ve and the green is -ve, so those 2 shouldn't be anywhere near touching each other.

You probably won't need a new reg/rec (depending on why the short has occurred), just fix up the wiring so there are no shorts. Check all of the wiring carefully, especially around the connector block.

Look into why the short has happened - any sign of burnt wires and you should check the whole electrical system properly.

ill have look around all the wiring

but im pretty sure the short is occurring within the reg rec no signs of the wires touching outside the reg rec

cant see any obvious signs of a short any where on the loom will have another look today

cheers alex

Unplug the reg-rec and see if you still have a dead short between the red / green wires.. if so your problem is elsewhere, if not measure the pins in the reg-rec unit that the red / green wires connect too.

A dead short (no resistance) would say your reg-recs busted
