NC30 charging problem

Post by gilly1 » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:52 am

Hi everyone,

My friends 1989 NC30 has a problem with the battery loosing charge. i have tryed a new rectifier and sorted out an earth and some wiring into the rectifier. i used a voltmetre to test it and it shows that the bike is charging the battery when its running and its fine when riding. but the problem is the battery drains very quick when riding the bike with the lights on (it last 10mins until the battery was totally dead last night) but is fine and seems to charge if we run it without the headlights on. Could anyone please shine some light on what may be the issue...i have been trying my hardest to fix it for him for weeks and i cant figure it out  .
Thanks people any advice is very welcome

That sounds like your regulator is dead.

Do a total test of the charging system.

Check the genny output (3 yellow wires)

You should have 50v AC not DC @ 5000rpm between the wires (try all combinations)

Check your battery voltage in DC volts at 5000rpm and at idle and let me know what you have at the battery... with and without the lights on

I'd go a dead or dying genny too - I had the same issues for a long time and I needed a new genny - it was burned out on one phase and so easily coped without the lights being on....but once they were on it drained the battery...

The three yellow wires can go in any order.

Test the output before just buying a generator.

Ref the wires - the yellow wires go on in any order.

ref the Genny - do the tests that Neo said, or just take the ocver off and se ehow crispy it is.

I often whore this pic...but it is a good one so here you go again.

I had exactly the same symptoms - the charging system cannot cope with the drain ont he battery when lights are on but can just about cope with just the spark plugs, dash and CDI..

Get the genny checked, you can get one cheap from someone on here no worries. (in fact, I might have one from my race bike)
