help pleeeeease.. probs with nc24 forks. urgant...

Post by suzbug » Sun Aug 29, 2010 12:05 pm

Can anybody give any advice, I am in the middle of replacing my for oil seals on nc24 and following a great guide I got from on here.
But, I cannot remove my damper bolt, it's just spinning.. how can I separate the two tubes? Is there a special tool? Where can I get one today??
Any help is really appreciated as I've drawn a dead end..

Your supposed to undo the bottom bolt first. without spring pressure on it the bolt will just spin...

as neo said, i used a 36" breaker bar with a reducer to a 6 allen, but you need the sprint to be pushing dont on the damper rod so you can get it undo.

An air gun might do the trick, otherwise you need to get a tool that'll fit into the top of the lower spring seat, I've posted a picture of the tool I used on here http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/s ... p?t=100943 reply #11

If you need further description then just ask ;)

Get your self a 24 mm bolt (24mm measured across the flats) and get it welded to a half inch round bar about 3 feet long so its head is at the end and push it into the head of the damper rod ,clamp the other end in a vice to hold the inner part of the damper rod. I had this problem before and found this to be the best way to stop the damper rod from spinning.

Sorry for late reply, had internet issues!
Thanks for the advice, I ended up rebuilding the forks and compressing them fully using a racket strap.
This gave me just enough resistance in the head if the damper and eventually the bolts cracked afnd unscrewed.
I was then able to replace the seals and oil.
Thank you very much for the and I was able to complete the job and I'm chuffed to say the bike now has an mot! First one in 5 years! thanks, couldn't have done it without your help

Yep, Always best to loosen the damper bolt when there together, an impact driver / shock approach will usually loosen the bolt.
