Just broke exhaust bolt :(

Post by code2006 » Fri Aug 13, 2010 9:24 am

Hi I tried to fit my new tyga exhaust and I have messed up
I connected the 2 front pipes fine
Then I connected the metal plate that connects to the engine then to the exhaust via spring on the rear left one fine. Put the right one on ( side were the brake pedal is) tightened the bolts and as I was tightening the left bolt (as you r looking at it) the bolt snapped :(
Tried to get it out with some
Mole grips but it's to hard and I to far in.

Ok I know I made a mistake by over tightening the bolt and now I must pay the price.
Could some one give me what options i have? I would prefer to take my bike to a place in London/Essex to get the bolt out. I don't want to make it any worst.
Plz guys only suggestions and not " u should had done this " ect ect
Thanks Alex

Do you have axcess to a welder, and can you get at the stud with the welder.if so place a nut say 8mm over the stud, weld the nut to the stud, let it cool slightly the put a socket on out it comes.

Never fitted a tyga system so im not familar with the fittings etc but what do you have left showing to grip on to?

If its a stud just get a stud extractor, not the ones that drill into the middle but the ones that grip around the outside, that on the end of a extension bar should do it.

Got extractors like these?:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165572
If you can't get the maul grips on the ones DM is on about might not work either.
To use the screw in type:
WD40 before you start and let it soak in. You'd need to drill into the centre of the sheared bolt. Centre punch (a sharp one) it first as close to dead centre as you can and drill into it with a drill bit thats not much smaller than the bolt. About 3/4 of the diameter. Use a good quality, sharp drill bit at low speed. A cordless drill is ideal. Don't let it go too fast or the bit will get hot and loose it's hardness. Don't weigh on to much and snap the bit in the hole. A good quality bit will bite with mild pressure. Then use the extractor. As you turn anticlockwise it will bite in and bring the bolt out. DO NOT buy a cheap extractor! Don't use the very tip of one that's a bit too big. You want to get a smaller one well in there. If it breaks you'll be back to square one. Take you're time and get it right. It's a good trick to learn. Most garages could do this for you in half an hour for under 15,000,000 quid (for cash).
If you try the welding method, let it cool fully before you try to move it. The heat will make the bolt expand and it'll be even tighter till it's cold.

Cool mate.
Might give this a try 2moro. Gona go to b&q to buy a decent drill bit. How do I know what size drill bit to buy? Would it need to be the same size as the extractor or slightly smaller?
Thanks

You'll need to look at the bolt and the extractors you're got to figure it out. They often come with some instructions that say what size drill to use with which extractor. If you look at the Halfords one's you'll see they go up in 2 or 3mm steps. I assume that is the physical size of the extractor and not what sized bolts is is meant to remove. Lets say you're broken bolt is 10mm. I would use the M6-8mm extractor with a 7 or 7.5mm drill bit.

be very carefull with the drill typw extractors they are hardend steel and if you snap that in the stud which can happen very easily you then have hardend steel in steel in alloy not at all fun
