NC35 exhaust cams in an NC30?

Post by Mananon » Thu Aug 05, 2010 2:35 am

As some of you may have read in another post, I'm taking off the heads this weekend to polish the ports, and lap the valves on my NC30. I'm also looking in to maybe skimming the head.
While searching through old posts on here for info I came across mention of someone who'd fitted NC35 exhaust cams to his 30. It stated that the 35 cams had slightly longer dwell at open (I think but can't find the thread again).
Anyone heard of this? Myth or reality?

It's true.

There's a diagram from honda showing the difference somewhere, will see if I can dig it out.

Here's the differences:

Cheers Cam.
Been trying to get the head of but it's stuck. Tap tap tap with rubber hammer. 1/2 mm so far.
Deep breath. Tap tap tap.
Off!

Ah you cheated and did an edit. I hadn't noticed, bright spark that I am.
So, obvious question - what's the net result? What do we gain?
Next question - who's got RVF exhaust cams for sale? Cheap that is.
I'll put up a post in the wanted/for sale section and see what's going.
Many thanks yet again.

There isn't a lot of over-lap on those cams :-)

You might get a slight performance increase but with an increased chance of reversion.

I hadn't thought of that Neo.
Do you think that better flowing ports and exhaust system might get things going the right way sooner at lower revs? Might be a problem at idle though eh.
I still can't find a solid answer on how much to (maybe) take of the head or best way to do the cam shimming.
Any thoughts?

I don't think the extra 3 or 4 degree's are going to cause that much of a problem, you can always give them a try and see how you get on.

Is this for a road or race bike? You could tune it up for better top-end power but this would comprimise idle / low speed rpm. Not necessiaraly a problem on Race bike.

Road and track days Neo.
Riding here on the road isn’t the issue it would have been in the UK though. Traffic was always an issue there, even on the Sunday run to Devils Bridge.
Here there’s relatively little or no traffic. Roads are wider and designed with more modern, faster vehicles in mind rather than cart tracks that have evolved over hundreds of years. Think of an A road with no junctions, road works, traffic lights or much in the way of traffic and a 20 metre wide strip of mown grass at either side in most places.
The next nearest town is an hour away and next nearest city is 2 hours with 1 tiny cafe and no fuel stops in between. To get there I need to cope with just 3 junctions.
What I’m getting at is that I spend very little time at idle when riding here. You get on and go where you’re going, only stopping for a brew and fuel. It's bliss!
The local motorpsort track is only a couple of miles up the road and is a good one for the smaller, more nimble bikes, especially if they put a chicane in the back straight.

As ever though, a few extra ponies don’t hurt.
