Help needed to start an nc30
Hello people. I bought an nc30 a couple of weeks ago (first bike!) which was running fine for about a week. Then, the battery went flat so had to jump start it to get it running. Battery went again so this time I charged it. When I tried to start it again, no luck. I can hear the starter motor going and air comes out of the exhaust (also, so does water for some reason?! could be recent rain or could be a kid who was washing the bike aiming the hose down the exhaust!! but this happened after the starting problems). I put new spark plugs in when I got it. Thats all I know. The guy who I bought the bike from said this was the place to come so I hope you guys can help. I really want to learn the mechanics of the bike myself so want to avoid a garage if possible.

Also, some of the spark plugs had a thin layer of oil on them all the way down to the end

Re: Help needed to start an nc30
check the basics first, check you got fuel tap on, and that kill switch is on RUN
then get a friend to help and the bike on a nice flat road, turn inition on with key to the full right position, maybe open the choke a little, get him or her to push, roll and get up to some speed of 10mph hold clutch in and pop it into first gear and dump the clutch whilst dropping your body weight into the seat and aim it at the back wheel
if you get it runnin pull clutch in and keep the revs steady and adjust the choke to suit,
if you got water in the exhausts then hopefully with the way the VFR engine is positioned it should have got to the cyclinders but if you have then you need to be carefull as a phenominom called HYDROLOCK occurs where Water CAN NOT be compress and bends all engine parts like valves, rods etc. be carefull try rule this out by checking the plugs, turn the engine over with the plugs out, whilst your at it check you have a spark by hold the spark plugs to the frame.
watch those fingers a shock off one of them will throw you in the air :)

Thanks for the post. I've just checked the spark plugs. They are all sparking. It's only been about an hour since I last tried to start the bike, the were a bit wet, is that a problem? It's like the bike is almost catching and starting, just seems weak, if that makes any sense.
I'll have to wait for my bro to get back so I can try your other method. Once I get it started once should it be alright?

How are you trying to start it? You might kill the plugs (they die really easy!)
Full choke NO throttle at all until its running.

Re: Help needed to start an nc30
mine had issues like this when I first got it, it took new plugs, fresh petrol and a full electrical testing to get it starting nicely. If it doesn't start again, check the oil level, if it is high take the tank off and look inside the air filter, oil can get blown into the air filter and then sucked into the top of the carbs and kill it.
If its a grey import then I strongly recommend rejetting the carbs, its really easy with the guide from on here and the performance increase is unbelievable.

YES! It's flooded, I doubt it will start unless you change plugs.ramonlv wrote:It's only been about an hour since I last tried to start the bike, the were a bit wet, is that a problem?
You can try taking all the plugs out, clean them up and stick them in a warm/hot oven for an hour or so to dry them out. No guarantees this will work, only other option is to buy a new set of plugs (pricey - but guaranteed to solve your issue!).
Believe me, you won't be the last person to flood it on starting - common newb problem because these bikes can be a bit fussy!!

Re: Help needed to start an nc30
Guys, thanks for the responses. It's much appreciated. The engine was flooded before but I changed the spark plugs and I've checked that they are working. I tried Halfords for some carb cleaner but no luck so think I'll have to order some online (unless there is another alternative?). Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted
