rear shock wispering to me..!

Post by pugparcels » Wed Jul 07, 2010 11:33 am

ok, jumped ( not literally ) onto the viffer this morning to move her to get me blade out and the rear shock went pisssst, i thought someone wispering to me?!?

i jigged about on the vfr and she continued to pisssst at me on every downwards motion. so i am guessing the shock has finally given up the ghost and is f :tits: cked ( tis the original so to be expected at some point )

i have the chance to have a sv 650 rear shock off a mate for literally pence, anyone every fitted one? i know there is no real adjustability in these but would be enough in theory to get through an mot etc if the sizedifference is not too great and funds are starting to get low now as well

once she is road legal and the mrs thinks i have finished, then i will look at uprated suspension, rearset and other bits.

right, to answer my own question

you can fit an sv 650 shock to a nc30. this cost me two pints of stella down the pub so was worth a try just so i can get through the mot.

2001 sv shock against my well used original

offering up the dog bone & linakages - pretty much a simple swap

took a bit more work than it looked to get it to due to the length difference, new holes on the shock had to be drilled to reduce the length centre to centre but...

i have gained about 12mm in ride height, the rear end is far firmer and it will even make fitting the cbr tail & undertray easier as i no longer have the resevoir to worry about!

Nice work! Looks like a cheap and easy fix.

Out of interest, what was the length difference between the shocks without the new holes in the SV shock?

off the top of my head it was around 30mm, i tried the standard holes first but found the rest of the dog bone linkage would not line up with the mountings on the bike ( to short ), so i had to drill news hole for this to work.

it was a fiddly job, though there is no real adjustment ( comapred to a maxton etc ) from this shock, it is a lot firmer than the original, which i am happy with, it has raised the height just ever so - which is better for me.

the real test will be when i take her for a spin on thursday.
