NC35 chain loose

Post by Christoph » Sat Jul 03, 2010 10:36 pm

Hi all,
I've noticed my chain is very loose (can't believe it passed the mot!). Could someone guide me how to tighten it?
Thanks :)

Hi,
If you have a paddock stand put the bike on that, if not no problem.
Loosen the rear wheel bearing hub bolt,
Use the chain adjuster tool and turn the notched disc between the swing arm and the wheel till the chain is at the right tension (approx 20 - 25mm)
Tighten the rear hub clamp bolt to the correct torque setting and you are done.
*Important* chech that the chain is within the chain tolerance on the chain guide. If you look through the wheel at the disc, you will see a guide to show if your chain is stretched. if teh front of the metal block lines up with the red bit you need a new chain. :peace:
An NC is for life, not just for Christmas!

Just to expand a little..

It's easier with the rear wheel jacked up as it allows the wheel to move easier.

If you look at the rear of the vehicle on the swinging arm you'll notice a 14mm nut. This is the Rear bearing holder pinch bolt.

You'll need to slacken it off.

Next to this you'll see a castleated disc, this is what you turn with the chain too, do not be tempted to turn it by hitting it with a screwdriver as you'll wreck the teeth.

You can get a proper tool from davidsilverspares if you want the honda one (£10) or for £18 you can get a really long one by searching for nc30 chain tool on ebay.

When re-tightening the pinch bolt torque it to 55nm / 5.5 kg-m / 40 ft-lb :)

Remember to sit on the bike and check the chain tension too as when you compress the suspension the chain will get tighter

What is the tool called to turn this disk? I have the original tool kit - will it be in there?
I guess I'll need a paddock stand - any reccomendations?
Thanks
Chris

It is a C spanner. If you have the original tool kit, there is one in there. It looks like a C and has a couple teeth on the end. There is also a hollow oval shaped handle for it in the kit.

*Update*

I adjusted the chain and it really was very easy! I can't believe even I managed it with no fuss!

And I tell you what it has made a *HUGE* difference to the performance of the bike. It's soo much more responsive, easier to ride and handles like a dream. Never expected to notice any difference! So that's deffinatly one thing worth checking on your bike.

Thanks for the help, all.

Chris
