nc24 drinking fuel

Post by David » Thu May 27, 2010 1:52 pm

I filled up my NC24 at the garage (£9.50) - rode 2 miles home then within a couple of days went on a ride approx 25 miles.
Just before I got back so around 52 miles on a full tank it began to show signs of fuel starvation. I put it into Reserve and it got me home ok.

I checked for leaks - the fuel tap is wet underneath so I'll need to remove and check but it wasn't spewing fuel everywhere, just wondering what happened to all my petrol. Checked oil level an just under max mark and no smell of petrol here (it has the Vaccumm mod so is gravity fed but I've cleaned all carbs, checked floats etc)

Any ideas?

Cheers

Small leak from Fuel Tap

Drained Fuel tank - turned upside down and opened the Fuel Tap - Please see pics.

Fuel Tap Pic 1 - http://www.fsqc.co.uk/nc24/FuelTap1.jpg
First pic Fuel Tap 1 shows the one section of the Fuel tap:
point A = Vaccum pipe blocked off due to mod
point B = where there was some sort of Grey sealant from the groove in Pic 2

Fuel Tap Pic 2 - http://www.fsqc.co.uk/nc24/FuelTap2.jpg
Point A = Fuel Pipe
Point B = not sure? - is this a breather - the rubber stopper is cracked as you can see from the pic - can I just replace with a home made rubber stopper?
Point C - this groove had some type of grey/white sealant that had broken down(likley cause of leak) so I cleaned it all up

My 2 big questions:

1 - Is there a rubber/gasquet for groove between the 2 metal plate sections or can I use some form of sealant that had been previously applied - what type - where can I get it?

2 - The little rubber stopper in Pic 2 (Point B) - can I just push another piece of rubber on here - would this cracked one caused any problems with the performance

Your fuel pipe is way too small.. it's overly stretched onto the tap.. the proper fuel pipe should be as wide as the pipe thats on the tap and secured with a metal clip

The smaller pipe would originally be where the vaccumn pipe connected to. Make sure the other end (engine side) has been blocked off else you will have an air-leak.

Thanks for that.
The vacuum at the engine side is all blocked off properly. The Bike is running fine, just appear to have this fuel leak.
The small rubber piece that is deteriorated - should I just replace with new piece.

The bit I don't know is what I should put between the metal plates - can I get some sealant or is there a proper part for this

Cheers

The different parts of the fuel tap are usually sealed with the rubber diaphragm inside. I would see if you can get an o-ring in there to stop it leaking.

Thank you.
So the Fuel Tap Mod has been done but I'm missing a rubber diaphragm to act as a seal.
Anyone else used anthing else to seal this?
I will check for an O-Ring that will fit
Is there a Fuel safe sealant out there?

Cheers

Put all back together and bike wouldn't start and fuel leaking on floor

Lifted Tank and sat its backside on a plastic foot stool which I positioned on where the seat goes.
Tried starting again and started straight away no problem - looking at fuel tap and hose - no leaks.

It appears that when Tank is fitted it is causing the Fuel hose to kink which in turn is causing the fuel to stop flowing to carbs or little to the carbs and push some out the top at the connection to the Fuel tap.
Is there a max length for this fuel hose maybe it's to long - it comes out od the fuel tap and circles round before going into the T-Piece for the Carbs.

Looking at the pictures I have tagged below - The fuel hose had a cable tie fitted by the garage - do I need a proper metal clip, if so, are these readily available.

I've seen fuel hose for sale on DavidSilverSpares - What is the correct diameter needed for the NC24

Looking at the pics -
Fuel Tap 1 - A = vaccum that has been blocked off properly
Fuel Tap 2 - A = Fuel Hose, B = Don't know - this is blocked off - is this correct - it has been running like this for a while.
