R6 Radiator Mod. Done Correctly.

Post by cajun » Wed May 26, 2010 4:57 pm

That done correctly was for Matt.

Had to go to the auto parts store and get a couple of hoses and couplings but other than that it was pretty easy. The reason I say done correctly is from what Matt did here.. viewtopic.php?f=26&t=16668&p=117720&hil ... or#p117720

This is a Rad from a R6S model or the prior years R6's like 03-05.

The problem with that is it's not reversed at the water pump and thermostat.... Which means it might work for a little while but will eventually overheat due to the head pressure. So what I did was re-route the hosing to the correct location at the top of the radiator (output). Found a 180 degree hose that went on some car (not sure which one, I just went into back of the auto parts store and looked around) that can be seen here coming out by the sprocket cover. Then added a piece of general hose but kept the orginal hose because of the 90 degree angle on the radiator, as can be seen in the next pic

Then I took the one coming from the water pump (intake) and ran it in front of the bike by the oil filter behind the headers. As can be seen in the pic below. Then routed to the lower spout on the RHS of the bike.

All in all it's a pretty good mod, I still have to make brackets to hold the radiator in place though. And this is the first mock up of it but it holds water and flows perfectly. I plan on getting a HRC airbox from GF and this drops down and allows for that to be done easier than the stocker. Best part was, since the R6s parts aren't in high demand over here I bought the Rad for $10 bucks on ebay and $12 shipping. That and the hoses cost a total of about $70 total.

From memory the R1 (4XV) has the inlet & outlet in the correct position so might be a better option and its bigger still than the R6 one I don't know how readily available they are over there or the ZXR 400 parts but I just fitted one to mine (ZXR400) and its very straight forward, you just need to grind off the unnecessary brackets so they don't get in the way and make up a couple of simple brackets although you need to be running downpipes with loads of clearance like the HRC or TSR systems

I had to knock up some brackets to get everything in place (literally struggle to get a Rizzla paper between the rad and fairing/exhaust) now it's in position I can make up something a bit nicer as that rusty 4mm steel was all I had

The 00 model R1 rad also works a treat. It is distinctive in that it has no curve and is dead flat.
Again you need the TSR or HRC headers. Had one fitted to my race bike for 2 yrs or so.
