choke cable not staying on

Probably a very stupid question but here I go anyway.

I installed a new choke cable a while back and all was working great, but after opening the switching gear where the choke is attached on the handlebars (I did this to spray some WD40 and clean contacts due to an electrical problem) it now springs back to off when I switch it on. This means I have to hold it down during initial warm up which I didn't mind at first but is becoming quite annoying now.

Have I re-connected it incorrectly?
How do I get it to stop at where I leave the choke lever
