Early type forks on a late NC?

Bought some preload adjusters off someone on here, went to put them on and found that they don't fit my bike!
My fork tops just have a threaded bit with a slot in the top. Are these earlier type forks?

My bike is an m plate registered in 96 but declared manufactured in 1994 shouldn't I have the later type forks??

Why would someone put earlier type forks on the bike?

Yes they are early model forks, probably put on because of a crash.

Are the later ones a lot better, is it worth me sourcing some and swapping them??

probably a bit better as they are cartridge forks and have rebound damping adjustment. but if yours are in good nic no pitting seals good etc would recomend getting an upgrade kit from rick oliver on here which includes new springs/spacers top spec fluid and a measuring tool for accurate level setting, one of the best upgrades you can do to these bikes.

Doesnt rick also sell a racetech kit for early type forks? if he sells something like this for early type forks then im sure they worth keeping and upgrading rather than getting late type forks and then the kit for them too as unless you know they've been refreshed its more likely there knackered.
