Lightening flywheel

Post by Spike16 » Wed Apr 07, 2010 11:38 am

right cant afford a gsxr chargin setup and have to keep charging gear for my streetstock class for racing but I need every tiny bit of power I can get from my bike now as its a stock motor and the others... lets say arnt.

has anyone seen or heard if you can do this?, how much meat do you recon you could take off

reason I ask is iv got access to a lathe and thier pritty simple flywheels to lighten.

only Q would be as the comm sits inside of the flywheel would you be better off machining the outside or inside of the flywheel? machining the inside would increae the air gap and reduce the performance of the gennerator surely?

While it sounds simple.

The flywheel is a permanant magnet (Well actually there are several magnets in the flywheel)

If you machine it from the inside you'll cut the magnets out and the bike probably won't charge!

Also you need a way of checking it's balanced properly.. while in theory machining it equally should be ok sometimes it's not and i'd hate to have an oddly balanced weight on the crank.

You could always buy a zxr

why don't you just take weight off the rest of the bike?

haha v funny smev and dave, trying to have a good tech based thread and u high-jack it, standard

well iv seen u can buy lightened flywheels on an exchange basis but their quite alot.

any suggestions si? theirs not much thats stock on the bike anymore and not sure what else I can lighten withought spending big money like bmc tank and wheels etc

thanks to dave we got the backlash gears off the cams today so thats a bit less weight (400g infact) and more importantly less inertia in engine.

Cool so you started it yet?

I've heard they sound like a bag'o' spanners with out them fitted but only when idling.

I'm temped to do the same on my NC30.

Was it a big job and/or difficult to do?

Smev (being sensible)!
