nc30 duff clutch?

ok my little darling starts, goes, stops. however the clutch is really struggling. it is biting within the 2 /3 mm of the lever. no matter how much i adjust the cable, to get her to bite it is so hard.

i reckon the clutch plates are shot, does this sound a reasonable disagnosis? if so best place to buy some replacements? obviously there is no such thing as a cheap good clutch, so any suggestions would be good.

You mean it only takes in the last 2-3mm when letting clutch out? The friction material may have worn away causing the clutch to slip and feel like its not taking.. One way to be sure is drain the oil, open right crank case cover, remove the clutch nut and pull the plates off to check

drain the oil???
have you adjusted both cable adjusters? is the cable over streched and at the end of adjustment? £12 is cheeper than £80 for a new cutch and then buy a new cable on top of.
i got the nc for £500 because the guy couldnt get the bike to feed power new clutch cable problem gone

have tried adjusting the clutch cable both ends and though the lever has a feel as it was in need of adjustment, the clutch still slips. getting her to bite can be hit and miss, but when she does it is right at the end of the lever & with the clutch in and in gear she is creaping forwards slightly.

i am guessing the friction plates, are shot hence the problem. will open her up on tuesday and see how they look. she had been sat in a field for 4 years before i bought her, if the worst problem i have is a knackered clutch for a £200 purchase think i did well!

It could also be the diaphragm springs on the end of the assembly, they return it when the push rod is released and provide the clamping pressure for plates to bite. Theres 3 of them and you check them my measuring their height with a ruler

ok, have watched the excellent clutch video in the stickies. really helpfull, i decided this afternoon no more messing about i will have ago.

did everything as per the video removed the plates and have checked them,

there not warped, but reading through the reasons that they could have failed in the haynes manual, it mentions glazing, they are glazed. so i am guessing there shot. have not got my verniers at the mo so cant check the thickness, but they feel thin and shiny.

but the question is when these fail from 'glazing' would they glaze on both sides? only ask because mine are only glazed on one side? is this the norm?

Are they glazed on the side the diaphragm springs are on? Could be due to larger forces on the outer plates closer to the springs. U sure none of the plain plates are burnt or warped?

they are glazed on the side closest to the inner workings of the engine, not the diaphram springs side. did not pay much attention to the plain plates just the friction ones as i had little time with the wife nagging me in the back ground.

will check them tonight, to see how they are. have got my verniers back now so can measure the thickness of them as well, but from feeling them yesterday they felt v.thin.

was just unsure as to wear on the friction plates would be even on both sides or just the one.

my neighbour mentioned this morning a friend at work is breaking a nc30 after a front end impact. He believes he may still have the clutch basket complete with plates etc in the bike. not sure on mileage ( but low he believes ), but he can vouch she was running - untill the accident that is, so if its cheap enough may give them a try before blowing more money on a new set of plates.

That sounds like a better plan than buying new, just make sure they not also glazed,burnt or warped. Also smell the friction plates, a burnt smell also indicates glazed/burnt

the kind chap my neighbour is has just brought them into the shop for me! having a look over them none look warped, glazed or smell burnt.

feeling the texture of the friction plates they feel thicker, i can feel the small squares in both directions and both sides of the plate when running my fingers over them.

with the one i have taken out of mine, i could feel the squares but only on one side of each plate and only from one direction, they also did not feel as prominant as these do.

will try these tonight and see how she goes - thankfully it is not as big a job as i thought but i am realising how much this would have cost if i had taken it to my local dealer etc..
