hey guys, I'm planning on building a race bike for next year and was wondering what bike mods apart from the standard stuff could be done to make a competetive bike...
Am thinking of using a 23 as that's what I know best...
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: Racebike planning
im in the same boat as you, but im using a nc29.
what i've gathered so far is:
Race exhaust system
carbs jetted and balenced to suit
upgrade suspension front and rear
possibly ram air.
get rid of as much unnessisary weight as possible
race cdi

Re: Racebike planning
There is good topic about race engine started by Greggo... also usefull. But really, if I'm planning to build race bike I would start from suspension - rear and front. In case it is not restricted by rule - completelly change front end to latest cbr600rr models and loking for the good rear shock..sh4d0w0lf wrote:hey guys, I'm planning on building a race bike for next year and was wondering what bike mods apart from the standard stuff could be done to make a competetive bike...

After that - exhaust, jetting, ram air, cdi and etc.

Re: Racebike planning
The cheapest best bang for performance mod is to have the head skimmed.
It's also technically the hardest mod as you need to know your cheeses to set the bike up for piston / valve clearance, plus sorting the offset on the cam gear drive.
There is a good write up buried in my race engine build thread by Dan if you can be arsed looking.

Re: Racebike planning
Rubbish.
Engine performance was the mistake I made. You get a few BHP and the bike goes a bit faster.
Do the suspension and that will knock off seconds per lap. Ask any pro racer.
NC29 wheels on the 23 is a good most.
Braided hoses and decent pads. SBS and carbon Lorraine are my preferred but EBC will do if unavailable. Make sure they are HH and sintered.
Tyres.
090's do me most of the time but if the weather is good, and I take my brain out, Super Corsas are superb, but get wet on the track and its wheel change time.
Jetting. Decide if you want peakky power or midrange then get a zorst or can and set up on a dyno to suit.

Is there much difference? Obviously a bit in the rear but the NC23 front is supposed to be lighter.Mikiboy wrote: NC29 wheels on the 23 is a good most.

Re: Racebike planning
the 23 is an 18"...
and with regards to the weight I think there is about 250grams in it....not worth it to have that foul 3 spoke.

Re: Racebike planning
Mianly for the easier choice on part worns - 17 inch rear is pretty much going to pay for itself with your first few sets of scrubs.
It is in the head...so get practice, think about the riding and what you are planning to do.
If I swapped bikes with the top guys at EMRA they would still hand my arse to me regardless of the power and suspension I had under me...so it shows that the bike is almost last in the equation - especially at club racer novice level.

Re: Racebike planning
I raced my R6 last year and guys on CB500's on 090's were lapping quicker than me. Ok, I admit, I could have gone a fair bit faster but I would still have been more a less last and riding at my limit, but there were still folk on the 500 who would have been a couple of secs faster, and I was on tyre warmers and racetecs. I would have beaten the 1098 but he crashed in front of me, so there was no point in being stupid. You dont get any prizes for last.
