Got a 1993 400SF Project Big one. Trying to get the engine out - everything is undone and removed, but can't get the right angle to get the lump out of the frame. Anyone know best way, either to the left or right?

I don't know if it will be possible for you on your bike but i have just taken the engine out of my nc35 and found it alot easier to lower the engine as far as you can ( i had mine supported on a trolly jack) and then i got a helpful pair of hands to help me lift the front end of the bike over the engine. Its amazing how light they are when the engine is not attached. hope this helps.

Cut the frame with an angle grinder ....

When I removed mine to clean up and repaint the frame I rigged a small block and tackle from a rafter in the garage I tied a rope around the engine under the exhaust ports through the front mounting holes and around and underneath the block underneath the chrome water pipes, I found I could manipulate the swing of the engine by tilting this way or that on the rope until I could clear the frame.
When I first slung the rope around the engine I used the rear engine mounting holes too but I found that it made it difficult to manipulate the engine, for me tying it around the front of the engine was easiest.
I lifted the engine out through the left side of the frame and put it back the same way although after doing this I think it may be slightly easier if you take it out and replace it through the right hand side because the side stand mount protrudes slightly.
Hint if you use this method try and tie the rope slack enough so that you can actually swing it about on the hook ,if the rope is tight it makes it just a bit more difficult to manipulate the engine .
For such a small lump the engine is quite heavy to try and get out on your own without aid although it is possible, replacing it is another matter and damaging the paintwork on the frame is a certainty if you try just using muscle power alone.
I did mine unaided ,Block and tackle is the answer. Jack
