Help - Cant get carbs off

Post by Bigjim » Sat Jun 14, 2008 11:54 am

Got the tank off easy, I cant seem to get the airbox out ! I assume the carbs need to come off to get it out the way.

Is the carb just held on by the ports going to the engine ? It wont come off :(

Any ideas guys ?

Jim

I don't know much about superfours but i would have thought the airbox would need to come of first as carbs are underneath it?

You will also need to remove choke cable and throttle cable to remove the carbs from the engine.

Which model do you have? Just a few thoughts: maybe the air box can be dissembled into two parts? Or maybe the airbox has to come out from behind the bike, over the swingarm but under the rear fender? Maybe the toolbox / battery holder sits in the way.

Can we still get to the old forum?

There was a really good thread about carb removal on there I seem to remember!

I looked in my manual for the CB400 Four 1997. Japanese text but lots of photos. No mention of taking the airbox off first. You have to disconnect the airbox from the carbs and then the carbs from the engine. Also disconnect any cables and pipes from the carbs. Remove any connections of the airbox to the frame. Move the airbox an inch backward. Take the carbs out. Move the airbox forward. It might slide out from where the carbs were, but my manual doesn't show it.

Just removed my carbs few days ago for cleaning (Tip, get an inline fuel filter!) The first thing to do is remove the choke cable this is easy when the tank is removed. Leave the throttle cables as you wont be able to get to them anyway. drain out the float bowls by the screw on the bottom of each. Otherwise you will be covered ib fuel. Please dont smoke either while doing this! unscrew the 2 screws on each side ot the airbox (oh and remove the plastic side covers from the airbox. Unscrew the jubillee clips from the rubber gaiters on each carb inlet and outlet. Pull the airbox back - should move back only 1 to 2 inches. Its a tight squeeze but by pulling up the rear of the carbs they should pop out of the front rubbers. Carefully remove the carbs to the right of the bike. Important Refit the throttle cables before fitting the carbs back or you will not be able to reach them - i did this (nobodys perfect!) and they have to come off again. Anyway bike runs brill now.

Thanks for the update and the pratical tips. Nothing beats real experience!
I noticed that the throttle cables are hard to get at so you leave them on the carbs and just disconnect them at the handlebar?

I cant get the airbox back further than an inch, theres a bloody great tube full of wires (i think) in the way. The carbs also seem to be stuck onto the engine block and wont come off with force either. Is it just a matter of pulling back as hard as you can?

i took off cdi, battery, also disconnected starter relay and moved wires, moved the water bottle tube out to the side ( aids slide back of airbox), took off the cosmetic covers on both sides of airbox, undid the cable holder on coil mounting on right side, the cables i didnt disconnect at twistgrip, just slacken nuts where u tension them on top of carb and slide out of mounts.. that gives enuff slack when removing to get carbs out. i had a m8 yanking the airbox back while i wiggled the carbs out.. needed a little upwards almost 45 degree angle pull to wiggle em out. slid them to right once out of blocks.
it was a million times harder than a gsxr750L which shocked me, but after the first time on 400sf second time was just rinse and repeat.
hope that helps in some way im not the best at describing how to's.
