noisy top end

Just did my valve clearances, I dont think they had been done before and the bike has done 75,000 km's, so I thought it would be wise. Two were out of range (too small). Anyway after doing them and checking and double checking I put everything back together and everything went fine. Bike idles beautifully, revs cleanly etc etc.
But once it gets warm it starts to get tappy. This doesn't effect performance at all but it does tick me off (no pun intended). I would have thought that the valves get tappy if the clearances are too large, however surely after the bike is warm the clearances would get slightly smaller? (metal expanding). Do you think this is something to worry about or not much of an issue?
The bike is an NC35
Ta for any help

Welcome to the site first of all
I would say it depends on what specs you went for with the clearances. I went for slightly looser clearances when I last did mine and it does have a little ticking noise. I have not had any issues with it at all and this was well over 6 months ago.
I have done trackdays, 360 mile motorway trips etc..no worries.
I would say that as long as you are happy with the job you have done then I am sure your bike is happy too!
75000 k's is pretty good going too...think mine is rolling up for 60k+ but having swapped speedos I have no idea really...

I went for 0.15 for inlet clearances which was halfway. I figured this would be a pretty safe bet. None of the exhaust clearances needed adjusting. I suspected it was nothing too terrible. Thanks for the peace of mind.
it's nice to make a post.

Sounds all good to me.. I went for .17 and .25 in my bikes and got most of them on the nail.
This is a quality forum for many reasons so good to have new people come along and contribute.
I doubt that there is anywhere else on the web where the depth of experience and enthusiasm we have on here is matched.
I have 2 nc30s and an fzr400/600 hybrid and will likely build up another of the nc30 frames I have sometime in the future...

I wouldn't worry about it if the clearances are right and everythings as it should be it's probably just a little wear in the valve train, mines coming up to 40,000km now and its a little tappy when the oil is warmed up and thinner.

Just a thought, Trude -
Did you follow the Haynes manual instructions when doing your clearances?
The reason I ask is that the clearances should be measured between the rocker and the valve but Mr Haynes tells you to measure them between the rocker and the camshaft...

I noticed that photo. Mr Haynes didn't fool me this time though. The clearances were measured between rocker arm and valve.
This is another little query, I am getting an rs250 shock rebuilt at the moment, and from what I can gather it is advisable to modify the shim stack to compensate for a stiffer spring (using the rvf spring). But are there any specs for this mod? I am not an expert on suspension but I know that it is a little more complex than just "adding a shim".Do you know what the shim thickness, i.d, o,d etc is?
I know you deal in Nitron shocks but I just couldn't afford that route (plus postage to New Zealand is not cheap) and you seem to be the bloke to talk to around here.
Any knowledge would be great.
