Re: How to: fit a BMW s1000rr rear shock to a VFR 400 nc30
So, i've read through all of the above posts and it is facinating and there is some really great information.
Its very useful if you're trying to get the very most from the bike in a track scenario but i just want to be able to go for a nice, fast, fluid ride out round my local country roads on a nice summers day.
I want to be safe, comfortable and for it to be an improvement over my stock, 23 year old shock. (i suspect this scenario is the case for most of us?)
Will i really need an hrc link to achieve this or will the BMW shock and suitable spring be sufficient without the link?

It don't matter if i'm fixin' it or ridin' it.

I think the consensus is that if you want to be trying to smash lap records you want the HRC linkage, but if you're simply riding around for leisure then you might be overdoing the spec a bit. Of course, there's probably no reason why you couldn't use the standard linkage and if you decided later on you wanted to go the HRC route, get the HRC linkage and have the shock altered to suit?

does anyone know if the battery box on the under-tray gets in the way of the shock reservoir? i want to upgrade the shock as i am pretty sure i heard an air leak from my oem shock reservoir when i moved the hose to cable tie it... i dont know why it sounded like an air leak but i didnt like it.

YOU ONLY NEED TO FILE THE TOP SPACER ON THE BMW SHOCK OR NC FRAME
AND THE BACK OF THE MOUNT FOR THE UNDERTRAY
THIS HAD BEEN COVERED MANY TIMES
hope the caps for work for people who fail to read or cant be arsed to read earlier posts

2.
With your new BMW shock you will have to slim the top of the shock down to fit into VFR frame, to aprox 38.4mm across. (alternatively you can widen the inside of the frame to suit the shock- I chose not to do it this way to keep the frame standard)
4.
You will need to file the frame back slightly on the back of the undertray mount. 3mm approx.

Do you have to cut the undertray to fit this shock?
