Re: my first serious breakdown, engine died at speed!
Correct.
I have jumped my motorcycle from a larger automobile battery before when I flattened the battery with a dry tank.
Doing it with an unknown potentially electrical fault is a bad idea though, a few years ago a friend of mine brought a yamaha thunderace? or something similar. the main 30amp fuse had been bypassed with heavy gauge wire.. he tried to jump it from a car battery and there was a dead short in the loom, it set fire to the loom and fried the ignition box.
While this is an extreme example it just shows what can happen with unknown electrical problems :)

Re: my first serious breakdown, engine died at speed!
hi guys
managed to have another look at the bike today
i took out number 1 spark plug and touched it against the crank case.
it sparked about 5-6 times and stopped.. i kept cranking but didnt spark again.
if i left it a while it would do the same
I have taken some pics and im certain i have the nc21 ecu fitted to my bike.
it is identical to one which is on ebay at the moment
how can i post pics?
my nc24 tacho has always displayed about twice what it should but i bought an nc21 tacho to try but the plugs dont fit.
where would you guys start looking with a spark initially but then nothing after a few seconds?? its all a bit strange!

this looks like an nc21 ecu to me, what do you guys think?

it ran once, so should run again...
*god i hope so!*

Yes that is the NC21 ECU.
Have you taken off the passanger seat?
There is also an OKI box under there too.
Your bike sounds like it was made of bits.. is that box connected up? What do you have under the passanger seat.
What does your frame number say? (dont give me all of it, just the first 4 digits.. NCXX)
And yes.. it did run so it should run again.
Perhaps flat battery.. did you charge it fully before testing?

Re: my first serious breakdown, engine died at speed!
thanks neo
i will look for the frame number and engine number tongiht when i get in.
Where can i find these??
I think i can remember you telling my it was an nc24 frame once before.
it has the nc24 exhaust anyway.
yes, the box is definatley connected up. i dont think ii have anything under my passenger seat but will try to have alook.
(i made a luggage rack to make my comute to uni easier, so it might take me longer to get to the rear seat...)
Yeah, i think i agree! bloody bitsa bike... grrrr...
*frustration*
no, i admit i didnt charge the battery to full, (ive lent my charger to somebody but cant remember who.. doh!) i took it out and put it on the fiesta again and charged it from that.
And, i admit, i did try it with the jump leads again, would turn quick and strong, but with no spark..
if i left it for a while (30 mins) it would spark a few times too, but then stop...

Re: my first serious breakdown, engine died at speed!
The internetmittent spark is an interesting one.
Once battery and electrical connections are ruled out it could well be a failing ECU unit.
Have a look under the passanger seat anyhow and see whats under there. If you take off the right side rear panel (which you had off to look at the battery) you should see two electrical block connectors near the passanger seat at the plastic tray.. they run to the oki box.

Re: my first serious breakdown, engine died at speed!
I'm no expert at all, but I had a similar problem on my NC21 - it turned out to be the main 30 amp fuse in the starter relay. It was basically loose in its mounting and would sometimes let the bike fire and sometimes not! It took me ages to figure it out, as obviously it hadn't blown so I discounted it as a problem. The symptons were the same as yours though - the tacho needle would suddenly go haywire and the bike would just cut out.

Re: my first serious breakdown, engine died at speed!
Good point there about the main fuse.
I had a snapped leg on my 30amp and it kept causing the bike to misfire, etc etc.
Now that you mentioned it I remember my tacho going haywire too.
However, I think the tacho on this bike has always been way off so forgot about that.
Worth checking the main fuse is in one piece and is secure not loose

Re: my first serious breakdown, engine died at speed!
hi guys.
well, i had a chance to look at the bike this weekend.
i bought a replacement ECU from Fleabay to use as a swap out to help fault finding.
Gues what... changed the ECU and it runs like a treat again!!!
I know the ECU was a long shot but with how it was running and loosing the spark after a few seconds was probably the weirdest fault ive ever come accros on an engine!!
Glad its running well again!
Thanks for all the advice. Im going to open the old ECU up and see whats causing the fault! i will post up my findings!
