If it's a hairline crack in a place that isn't structural then I'd have a go at repairing it with those two part metal epoxy type things. You'll know the sort of thing I mean but I just can't remember the brand name of it. I've done it before with some success.
How hard can it be?

I once had a bike on axle stands with the engine chocked on wood, and riving and pulling to get swing arm out tipped bike onto floor. Then I noticed a drip of oil!
A chunk like you mention sounds pretty terminal unless you can get it ally welded.

I reckon it is terminal to be honest, the chip is too big and because it would join a seal with the upper case its fuck, I do have a spare though lol Lucky eh :D
