It could be that something is draining the battery or that the battery is not being charged.

To check that the bike is charging put a multimeter set on volts across the battery terminals and start the bike, engine off and at idle should be around 12 volts, as you rev the bike up the voltage should rise up to a max of around 14 volts, if not your charging system is faulty.

To check if there is a drain disconnect the earth lead and put a multimeter set on volts between the negative terminal and the earthing point, if it shows a voltage with everything turned off there is a drain.
To narrow down where it is hook the earth lead back up, remove the fuses and do the same check across the pairs of terminals in the fuse box, the circuit that shows a voltage reading is where the drain is.

You will need to set the meter to amps not volts to measure any current drain on the battery, you will get no voltage reading, you can only measure voltage across a load or supply.

sounds like the same problem i've been having. If I were you I'd check the reg/rec and alternator readings too. (see manual) or my thread further down in this section. I found that my battery was drained too. If the alternator isn't doing what it shoud be it won't charge the battery so it will be flat. Even if its a brand new one like mine. :roll:

You will get a voltage reading as the multimeter in in series in the circuit,
Drain =electron flow = a voltage reading,
No drain= no electron flow=no voltage reading.

Also very usefull for looking for dodgy connections especially eathing points, leave the connection hooked up and test across the connection (one probe either side) with a load on it, if the connection has high resistance you will get electron flow through the multimeter, good connection = no or very low reading, dodgy connection will give a higher reading.

Normaly dont recomend peopel use an amperage setting when I don't know their mutlimeters current capacity, prefer not to burn out peoples gear.

I have always measured current flow in series and voltage in parallel across a load, but you are right of course, if there is current flow in a circuit then a voltage must be present, and show on the meter as it is in series. I was thinking that the 2 points were at the same potential

I measure current drain to see the extent of the problem.

Would you expect to see full battery terminal voltage at the measuring points under fault condition, and how would this voltage change with load/drain.

Dave. Learning all the time.

Thanks for all the help i put the multimeter across the batery teminals started the bike reved it the meter was reading 14.4 volts i checked the fuses to find to see where the drain from my battery was comming from and two 15amp fuses indicated that there was a drain i checked the conections to the reg/rec and as you can see one wire has cooked when i disconected the block connecter the drain on my batery vanished i'am not sure whats going on as the bike is charging.
Can anyone help.

Why does the alternator and the regulator fail on the nc30 why is it so common.
Most other hondas are ok my cb500s is fine and my 87 vfr750 is ok.
