Replaced the inlet rubbers on my NC35 as they were looking past their best and whilst trying to refit the carbs over the HRC air tray making sure all cables etc didnt snag anywhere i lost my rag and threw the HRC tray out the garage, it makes fitting the carbs an absolute nightmare and i decided thats the end of it.
I dont have a rubber air flap to go in its place but thought id take a chance and see how it runs, i also dont have a snorkle and run just a thin foam filter. Took her out for a test ride this morning and she's never run better.....Zero flatspots and none of the problems caused by having no rubber flap. Im running 14/42 gearing so this maybe masking the odd flatspot but even in 6th it picks up really well from 6k onwards.
Dont get me wrong im chuffed to bits its running well but also confussed as to why??? everyone knows removing the rubber flap or using no air tray causes major issues so why is mine running so well?
As for the carbs they were spotless when i got the bike so felt no need to strip and check anything other than the main jet sizes which were bigger than standard but cant remember what, they did have 0.5mm washers so replaced them with 1mm and HRC springs, other than that ive no idea if anything else has been done to them. Velocity stacks are also standard for the time being....
Any ideas????

Munky, it's usually nc30's that are affected by induction changes. The nc35 carbs are much more forgiving.
The hrc springs you fitted will also help cover up any glitches, they flow more fuel (at the same revs/load compared to standard springs). You're right about the gearing helping to cover up any spots also I reckon.
FWIW I think it's pointless using an air tray with an airbox. It just complicates things!!

Too right those air trays are a pain in the arse.
I've heard that too about nc30/35 carbs but back when I had a standard 35 removing the rubber flap rendered it useless above 5k.

I tried running my '30 just without the snorkle and it ran like a bag of shit, wish my carbs were as forgiving as yours!

Changed the gearing to 15/42 today, not quite standard but much more road friendly than 14/42. Its a little flat down low but still perfectly rideable and more to the point....no flatspots, picks up from 6k and rockets towards the redline
I may experiment with the shorter hrc stacks and air box soon but tbh im more than happy with this setup for the road
