fuel consumption very bad

Post by Spike16 » Fri Apr 24, 2009 7:55 pm

ok a couple of weeks ago i rebuilt my carbs, removed the restrictors and but the bike back together, played about with a foam filter 2.5mm slides and extra shims in the needles but couldnt get it to run right so went back to standard. the standard filter we put back in it was rather dirty adn really needs a new one

since iv put the bike back together iv noticed it has got very thirsty, before the rebuild (restricted) it would do 100 miles easily before switching to reserve but it would do drink about 1/3 of a tank in each 15 min session on my trackday and on wednesday night i went on a ride and it only managed 77 miles before needing to go on reserve granted this wasnt a slow jaunt but i thought this was excessively bad

iv filled up again and done just over 50 miles and its looking little low in the tank already

could this be down to the dirty filter? the only other thing i can think it could be is iv had to swap the fuel tap from track to race tanks so could it be the tap isnt sealing correctly and leaking?

no heavy fuel smells when the bike is still hot? no leaks in fuel lines or anything?

if the fuel tap is suspect, the fuel is going some where. best to keep an eye on the oil level/consistency.

Don't forget that gearing, and all the stuff that you have done to the carbs could have altered the mixture, leading to less tank range.

See what it does this time around.

If its still bad get a new std air filter first of all.

Are any of your chokes sticking partially open? Will increase your fuel consumption.

Have you adjusted any of the float-heights etc.

I set the float hights as they were slightly out, the carbs were put back to standard tho same jets, same slides and same needle spacing, there is no obvious fuel smells and this time round the bike did 60 miles before it started surging so switched to reserve

is it possible iv put the fuel tap back on with the feeder pipes the wrong way round? as i worked out the money i spent on fuel was about 10 litres and isnt the main tank capasity ment to be 12 litres before the reserve? I put it back together so the little bit of tube sticking out of the two tubes that goes in the tank went into the round indent inside the tap (does that make sence?)

should i get some of that tank leak fix and swirl that round in the tank to help stop any possible leaks?
