check your oil levels, and also the condition. and if you know how, then check you're getting a good spark on all four cylinders. i had this problem at one time on my vfr400k, but i can't remember for the life of me how i sorted it.

The bike has a vaccumn operated fuel tap.. it closes automatically when the engines not running.ktb wrote:cheers neoman!!! about the fuel tap the bike is always stinking of petrol and i couldn't identfy the cause so it may be that?

It works via a little take-off pipe from cylinder #3 (rear left if sitting on bike) that opens the diaphram via suction when your cranking the engine / its running.
These pipes are known to go brittle over the years. Take the fueltank off and its 4 screws on the tap to check the diaphram. Also check the pipe is not perished at all. (for what they cost it woudlnt' hurt to replace it)
If it's stinking of fuel it could be leaking, or the carbs could be overflowing which would usually be either, float heights wrong so overfilling, jammed float / worn sealing pin on float. Carb bowl gasket leaking.
