Re: rear brake dragging
Cheers for that rick, do you have the both shims for rear caliper in stock?I understand totally about the servo effect but its , I gather, because I have no front shim that the bike is hard to push backwards, not just dragging but nearly locking on!! So will need 2 new shims, can you pm me if you dont mind so I can paypal you, thanks

Re: rear brake dragging
When you guys are saying shims, are you refering to what the Haynes decribes as pad springs?
After my restoration I took my NC for a shakedown yesterday - all was working well apart from a dragging rear brake
It was very hard to push it forwards and in the end I couldn't take the brake assembly off the brake mounting as the pads were still biting very hard on the disc - I had to open the bleed nipple and ease the pressure off that way
On inspection, everything looked good - I had replaced the seals with OE before the rebuild but I did notice a pit of corrosion in one of the pistons - I'm having a hard time believing that this is all that was causing the dragging

Re: rear brake dragging
You'd be surprised chap, that will clean up easily with some fine wet n dry used wet, sounds like your pistons are sticking if its dragging that much..did you use new seals?and if so did you scrupulously clean the grooves of corrosion/crap?.. Shims I was referring to were the pad guide ones(one at the front and one in the rear/sliding part)as I didn't have the front one!!
...all sorted now though.also I had unknown/cheap pads in at the time so changed those over for sbs ones..)..how are you getting on with it all??

Re: rear brake dragging
Thanks Richy
I think I'm safe in saying that the caliper was scrupulously cleaned and clean... :)
The seals were new too - although between the time of reassembly to actually riding the bike was a few months - hard to imagine that pit of corrosion growing from a few months sat still - I certainly didn't spot it when I stripped everything

Anyway, I bit the bullet a ordered new pistons - it's a bit extravagant but this bike is going to be a long term commuter and I can't be dealing with stripping the brake every week - besides, aren't the pistons anodized with an anti corrosion surface that reveals non-stainless steel underneath?

Re: rear brake dragging
Yes,that's true, but unless new most of that has worn away by now!!.did you soak the new seals in brake fluid before fitting??.if not they can swell a bit when fitted and come into contact with sealing the fluid.. think its safe to say the grooves were clean!!!.nice and shiney..lol...i guess with new ones you at least wont have any stresses with them as all rebuilt now..look nice!!
