Just bought a cb400sf 92 model

Post by lutha23 » Sat Apr 09, 2016 1:04 pm

Hi guys just bought. An old cb400sf and its got signs of neglect but nothing that cant be fixed....

A small list of problems i found

1.battery not charging
2.tapping sound when idling but goes away above 3000rpm

Ive given the bike a thourogh look no oil leaks or rattling noises. The previous owner had a slip with the bike evident from broken brake nd clutch lever nd mirror nd s
Light scratches on engine....

Im gonna do a bit of work on the bike. The req seems to be working fine i suspect a wire is touching somewhere on the bike nd causing the battery not to charge at times. Nd the tapping sound that disappear above 300rpm

I would like for you to guys to help me with these two problem i have abit of mechanical knowledge owned a few scooters before this big one

Without delving too far into mechanics just now, I wonder if your charging issue is in regards to dodgy reg/recifier (a common problem with Honda 400s). Get the bike running, get a multimeter hooked up to the battery terminals - if it reads over 15 volts when revved, chances are the unit needs changing.

In regards to the engine noise - could be the cam chain tensioner, could be the valves need adjustment. When was the last oil change? I had a similar noise when first picking up my Superfour - ended up being the exhaust nuts needed tightening (as the sound had gone away when the bike was hot).

If the bike is showing signs of neglect then it is possible the battery hasn't been changed in years and it's past its best, maybe a good decision to replace it.

My mates CB had a tapping as well and it turned out to be a loose exhaust nut too, check the easy things first

Also another thought, if the reg/rec or generator is faulty it could have over charged the battery and damaged it that way.
