Poxy Gremlins

Post by pptom » Fri Mar 04, 2016 3:04 pm

Since I had a half day leave from work today and the sun was shining I thought I'd wake the NC23 up from hibernation.
Not been used since a wet trackday last September where it performed flawlessly as it always has.
Took about 30 secs of cranking to fire up, but thats not bad considering. I've done nothing to it since September, its not even been on a battery tender.
Got to the end of the drive after 5 mins warming up and it had a little stumble which I put down to the layup, anyway off I went.
Did about 4 miles to the petrol station and after filling up it wouldn't start, there was me feeling like a fool cranking it over and hoping the battery wouldn't die when all of a sudden it went, phew.
About 30 secs later I noticed the temp needle was off the gauge, then followed various bouts of engine stumbling, the indicators wouldn't work and when i turned off the lights the temp needle went back to normal.
Ride cut short and I went home with my tail between my legs.

There's obviously some sort of wiring issue, no doubt due to the water it saw in September which has been festering for the last 5 months.

Has anyone traced something similar which could help me cut the time down of stripping it all down to check everything?

You know you've got it bad when you dream about fixing your bikes!
In my dream there was a wire above the cam cover that was broken. I didn't check this but woke up with a renewed enthusiasm and started taking the rear fairings off with no particular thought out plan of action.
By luck, the first thing I looked at was the Reg/Rec, lo and behold a broken wire / terminal!

Looks like it had rubbed on the fairings being a bigger CBR600RR Reg / Rec.
I re-wired and checked it out, with the wire unplugged the indicators don't work, with it re-connected all works fine and the bike started straight away.
Still got to have a ride to test things out, but I'm pretty happy its sorted.

Possibly the easiest and luckiest fix ever.
Hope this may help someone else in the future.
Tom
