Nc30 Power and Electrical blues

Post by Juicyjayjay » Fri May 08, 2015 8:32 am

Hi all

Im new to this forum , all the help i can get would be greatly appreciated.

Took my vfr out for a spin , this only started yesterday , for the first few miles the bike was running fine and all of a sudden temp gauge and rev gauge are non operational ,the lights on the bike and around ignition are non functional , the bike has lost alot off power almost seems as if it was running out of gas like the bike was stammering and shaking then all of a sudden everything is working again.

Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the voltage on the battery? Has it been stood for long? Do you use a trickle charger when the bike is not running?

Re the sudden recovery though - hmmm....it does sound like an electrical fault due to the gauges not working - but then a sudden recovery...check the main fuse - it sounds like an intermittent connection somewhere. I dunno - I'm just guessing though.

The reg rec has probably packed up, it's weak on hondas. This means the battery hasn't been charging from the alternator, so when you ran it the bike was running on the power stored in the battery, when that ran out all the electrics stop and the bike has no spark.

Recharge the battery then check the battery's charge with a voltmeter, your looking for about 13.5volt
Put it on the bike and it should run, again check the voltage and it shouldn't be higher than 14.5v when you rev the bike. If it's lower than that or higher the reg rec is dead and will need replacing.

It's best to replace the reg rec, the wires from it and the alternator because if one goes they can damage the other components.

this sounds very much like a bad earth / bad battery connection.

check your connections to the battery first as they are the easiest to get to, remember to check both ends of the earth strap, the battery and the frame

there are only a couple of additioonal earths on the bike, one is on the left hand side down by where the main side panel bolts on with the spacer, check they are all tight.

i also had similar issue with a loose main fuse so you can check this too its in the starter relay, make sure it isnt loose / corroded.
