RC24 tune, pickup placing, clutch and carb balance q's

Post by fstarocka » Thu Dec 04, 2014 6:55 am

Just finished putting bike back together after 4th was grinding and bike was rattling in idle. selector fork was eaten away on one side so i replaced the fork and the whole gear set as a precaution to having to split case again! any ideas what would cause a fork to get eaten away on one side only? Gears looked great - no grinding / chipping... All works perfect now - so nice to have all the gears back!

1: Clutch still slipping:
I polished and cleaned the clutch slave assembly, rubber was still super soft - everything works well.. I micd the clutch plates and they were well withing spec - So the clutch is still slipping although MUCH less, ive even adjusted the lever to have a tiny bit of play before engaging.. should I change to a mineral oil? Also - is it possible to put a washer underneath the clutch springs to give them more strength? Nothing looked bust in there.. no side play on basket or bearings..

2: Crank Pickup:
I noticed i must have slightly knocked one of the crank pick ups while doing the job so gently bent it back, if this is out by a few hairs would it effect timing? If so - is there a way to check the timing somehow? to make sure the spark is occurring at the right time or does the computer somehow do this/correct it somehow? otherwise ill just use one from the old engine for now.. surely even just bolting it on and off would adjust it slightly?

I will do the valves after a few rides, i didnt even bother really - bike still starts well, but seems to idle worse until warmed up, where prev the rpms between hot and cold seemed alot less.. this is either timing and or carbs..

At part throttle the bike seems to surge slightly, as if there is either a timing, valve and or fuel issue - like the power almost wants to come thru but doesnt.. before it went like a rocket with a seemingly endless power curve! It did stand for a year so might be some debris in a circuit somewhere..

3: Also - I have a k&n filter and a bigger exhaust - possible I need to re-jet?

4. With carb sync - What is more important first, setting the butterflies or doing the vac mixture? I set the blutterflies at idle, but then decided to do it at part open throttle - does it matter where? They open just about perfectly - I will be performing a first attempt with DIY gauge sometime soon - after cleaning carbs, doing valves and then hopefully a succesful carb sync!

Any info wd be appreciated thanks!
