When i plug it in to my laptop it's coming up as a serial bus.

Your version of the application software runs on your PC but you cannot establish a serial data link?

Correct,
I'm beginning to think the unit is fucked,
I have only tried this off the bike as i don't have a bike assembled at the moment.I have it connected to a 12V batter when i got it i had a usb lead with it,
Plugged in i get a red box No connection to PC. I have tried this on two different laptops,
Windows 8.And now XP Pro,I ge the same thing on both,
I went out and bought a 9 pin serial lead this afternoon still the same thing.

are you using a proper serial port on a laptop or a usb adapter? sometimes the usb to serial adapters dont work well with stuff

Hi neo,
I have used a USB to RS232.That's 9 pin.
I have also used 9 pin to 9 pin and neither work.

For the USB to RS232 you need a driver. I don' t know if it will work with win8.
And not all the wires work with the ignitec.

this sounds like your problems as Michael says too.

your old XP laptop has a proper serial port built into it then?

Your 9pin to 9pin cable might not be the correct cable... they are two types of 9pin to 9pin cable and both look identical but the internal wiring is diferent...

I would use the serial port built into the laptop with windows XP but you need to ensure that your cable is the correct type.

you can get 9 pin straight wires and 9 pin null modem.

you can see the wiring here if you want complicated pictures!

do you know what type of 9 pin cable you have now? it might say on the bag if you still have it.

Hi Michael,
Yes the more i thought about it i rememered the driver disc was stuck to the inside of the packaging,
The drivers are only suitable for XP so won't work on windows 8,Maybe a new one would this one is a few years old.
Thanks for your input.

Neo
Thanks for the information.
I have found the problem,The manual states that you can use a battery providing it has 8 to 18 volts,
My battery was reading 10.3volts so i thought this would be ok,But obviously not i put the battery on charge now have 13.2volts tried USB cable first no luck,Then i plugged in the 9 pin BINGO,It now works.
Thanks for your help,It's good to talk.
PS. I have no doubt there will be more questions.
